Historic milestone: India brings 5G connectivity to world’s highest battlefields

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 19: In a monumental leap towards bridging the digital divide and empowering both soldiers and remote communities, the Indian Army has successfully extended high-speed mobile connectivity across the entire Union Territory of Ladakh, including some of the world’s most hostile and challenging terrains, such as the Galwan Valley, Siachen Glacier, and other forward locations in Eastern and Western Ladakh. This transformative initiative ensures that soldiers deployed in extreme conditions, as well as local populations in isolated border areas, are now seamlessly connected to the digital world, fostering communication, socio-economic growth, and national integration.
“For the first time, soldiers stationed in some of the most inhospitable terrains on Earth—such as Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), Galwan Valley, Demchok, Chumar, Batalik, Dras, and the Siachen Glacier—have access to reliable 4G and 5G mobile connectivity,” said Lieutenant Colonel Suneel Bartwal, a Jammu-based defence spokesperson in an official handout issued today.
He described this achievement as a historic milestone that not only enhances operational efficiency but also significantly boosts the morale of troops deployed at altitudes exceeding 18,000 feet. These soldiers, often stationed at winter cut-off posts that remain isolated for months, can now maintain regular contact with their families and loved ones, providing them with emotional and psychological support in some of the harshest environments imaginable.
This groundbreaking effort has been made possible through a collaborative approach under the Whole-of-Government framework. The Indian Army, leveraging its robust optical fibre cable infrastructure, has partnered with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh to bring this vision to fruition. “The Fire and Fury Corps has been instrumental in driving this synergy, resulting in the installation of multiple mobile towers on Army infrastructure, including four critical towers in the districts of Ladakh and Kargil alone,” Lt Col Bartwal noted. These towers represent a triumph of engineering and coordination, ensuring that even the most remote locations are now part of India’s digital network.
One of the most remarkable achievements of this initiative is the successful installation of a 5G mobile tower on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield. This feat underscores India’s technological prowess and unwavering resolve to overcome geographical and environmental challenges. The deployment of 5G technology in such an extreme environment not only enhances communication for troops but also sets a global benchmark for innovation in high-altitude connectivity. “This is a proud moment for the nation, as it demonstrates our ability to harness cutting-edge technology to serve both our soldiers and our citizens in the most challenging of circumstances,” Lt Col Bartwal added.
While the initiative has been a game-changer for troop welfare, its impact extends far beyond the military. It represents a significant nation-building effort that is reshaping the socio-economic landscape of Ladakh’s remote border villages, often referred to as ‘First Villages.’ By integrating these isolated communities into the national digital network, the Indian Army is driving transformative change in multiple domains.
