Karra defies Cong top brass, calls for talks with Pakistan | AICC says Kharge’s, Rahul’s views represent party’s official stand; others have no say | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28: Post Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 people, mostly tourists dead, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, has put his party in a tight spot by suggesting that India should hold talks with Pakistan. His statement triggered a backlash from the opposition as well from his own party as he went against the stand taken by the Congress to support all the moves of the central government to take decisive action against terror. After attending the All Party Meet chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi last week, the All Indian Congress Committee chief Malikarjun Kharge and leader and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi had offered unconditional support to PM Modi led government to crush terror and its backers. However, Karra while talking to reporters said, “I request both India and Pakistan to keep their cool. Whatever has to be done, it must be done across the table. They should sort it out through dialogue. Both countries should not be pushed towards devastation anymore.” He said, “No Kashmiri is in favour of war between India and Pakistan. It is the common people of Jammu and Kashmir who suffer the most whenever tensions escalate between the two neighbours. J&K gets converted into a battleground whenever India and Pakistan fight.” Soon after Karra’s statement a Congress spokesman issued a statement which read: “The Congress Working Committee had met on April 24th 2025 and passed a resolution on the brutal terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam two days earlier. Subsequently, on April 25th 2025, the Congress President and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha attended an all-party meeting and put forth the party’s stand. Some Congress leaders are speaking to the media. They express only their personal views, they do not represent the views of the Indian National Congress (INC). At such a highly sensitive time, there should be no doubt that only the CWC (Congress Working Committee) resolution, the views expressed by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, and the views of authorised AICC office-bearers represent the official position of the INC.” After the Congress spokesman issued the statement Karra took a U turn and wrote on X: “The Indian National Congress stands united with the Government of India at this critical juncture. In matters concerning National interest and sovereignty, we extend our full support to all necessary and appropriate actions. The defence of India’s integrity must remain paramount.” |
