Early Times Report

Jammu, July 24: Marking a significant return to the political stage, former Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and chairman of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Ghulam Nabi Azad, made a high-profile visit to Reasi today.
After a prolonged period of political inactivity—largely attributed to his party’s disappointing performance in the recent Assembly elections—Azad’s reappearance is being viewed as an attempt to revive his political standing and reconnect with the people.
During his interaction with the media, Azad strongly reiterated the demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir—a cause that continues to hold emotional and constitutional significance for the region’s residents. “Restoring statehood is not just a political necessity but a matter of dignity, identity, and democratic rights for the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” Azad asserted, urging the central government to take concrete steps toward fulfilling the long-pending promise.
Azad’s return comes at a challenging time for the DPAP. The party, which he founded after breaking away from the Congress, has struggled to gain traction on the ground.
Several prominent leaders who initially supported his new political venture have since distanced themselves, raising concerns about the party’s viability and organizational strength. The poor electoral performance in the recent polls further eroded confidence in the party’s future.
Despite these setbacks, Azad’s visit to Reasi signals a renewed determination to reclaim political relevance and reposition the DPAP as a voice for regional aspirations. His engagement with local communities and emphasis on statehood reflects a calculated move to reconnect with the grassroots and reignite public support.
Political analysts note that while Azad’s influence may have waned in recent months, his long-standing stature, administrative experience, and ability to articulate key issues still resonate with sections of the electorate—particularly in areas where sentiments around statehood and governance remain strong.
The visit has sparked renewed interest in Azad’s political journey and the future course of the DPAP. Local residents and political observers are closely watching to see whether this re-engagement marks a turning point for both Azad and his party.
As the discourse around statehood continues to intensify, Ghulam Nabi Azad’s re-entry into active politics may yet have a bearing on the evolving political dynamics of Jammu and Kashmir.
