| Fisheries Revolution | | | The Centre has released Rs 111.66 crore for implementing a comprehensive fisheries development project in Jammu and Kashmir. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has thanked PM Modi and the Union Fisheries Minister, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, for the initiative and has assured the farmers that the Government of India is fully committed to improving the livelihoods and welfare of fish farmers in the Union Territory. At a time when diversification of livelihoods has become essential for sustainable growth, fisheries—particularly cold-water fisheries—could emerge as a powerful engine of prosperity for the region. The Centre’s assurance of additional funds upon the effective utilization of the sanctioned amount reflects not only fiscal support but also a long-term commitment to strengthening the fisheries sector. This approach encourages accountability and performance while ensuring that development initiatives do not stagnate due to financial constraints. It sends a clear message: progress will be rewarded, and momentum will be sustained. Earlier this month the National Conference on Cold Water Fisheries, organised by the Department of Fisheries, Government of India was held in Srinagar. The event discussed the remarkable surge in fish production in the UT and infrastructure upgrades since 2020. J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha highlighted the administration’s resolve to empower fish farmers and propel them toward lasting prosperity. “Jammu Kashmir holds promise as a national model for integrated fisheries development. The value-chain approach will generate jobs, cut post-harvest losses, and boost fish farmers’ incomes,” he said. According to the officials under Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), launched in 2022, Rs. 233 crore were allocated for fisheries to incentivize entrepreneurship, establish hatcheries, trout farming & value-added ventures and over recent years, fish production and related infrastructure have seen substantial growth. Focused efforts of the administration have made Jammu and Kashmir the top trout producer among India’s cold-water states. At the heart of development lies the vibrant farming community, who are not mere producers, but the bedrock of J&K’s identity and economy. The community is being honoured for its role with due respect, investment, and technology. The Centre’s financial assistance, coupled with the administration’s proactive policies, has set the stage for a fisheries revolution in Jammu and Kashmir. If implemented with diligence and vision, this initiative has the potential to not only boost incomes but also redefine the region’s rural economy, making it a model for the rest of the country. |
