Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 26: In a significant step towards preserving their religious and cultural identity abroad, members of the Kashmiri Pandit community in the United States have acquired 7.5 acres of land in Livermore, California, to establish a Mata Kheer Bhawani Temple and cultural centre. The land, valued at approximately $2.4 million, was formally dedicated with a Bhumi Pujan ceremony held on April 25.
The ambitious project, funded entirely through community contributions, including a substantial anonymous donation, is being seen as a landmark initiative for the diaspora. It aims to recreate the sanctity and spiritual essence of the revered Mata Kheer Bhawani shrine at Tulmulla in Kashmir, which holds deep emotional and religious significance for Kashmiri Pandits.
Community members said the temple and cultural centre will not only serve as a place of worship but also as a hub for preserving and promoting Kashmiri Pandit traditions, language, and rituals—especially for younger generations born and raised outside India following the mass displacement of the community in the 1990s.

Visuals from the Bhumi Pujan ceremony have been widely shared on social media, showing elders and children participating together in Vedic rituals and devotional chants under a banner announcing the upcoming temple and cultural complex. The images and videos have evoked a strong emotional response within the global Kashmiri Pandit community, symbolising resilience, continuity, and a collective effort to keep their traditions alive despite displacement.
Organisers said the proposed centre will host religious festivals, cultural events, educational programmes, and community gatherings, ensuring that the ethos of Kashmiri Pandit heritage is sustained across generations.
The initiative has been widely hailed as a powerful testament to the community’s enduring spirit and its commitment to preserving identity and faith, even thousands of miles away from their ancestral homeland.
