| NC MLAs meet sparks buzz as Congress gets no invite | | |  Early Times Report
Jammu, May 31: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has convened a meeting of National Conference (NC) legislators and five Independent MLAs, including Cabinet Minister, supporting the ruling alliance, amid growing concerns over governance and reported dissatisfaction among some ruling party legislators over the functioning of certain ministers.
Sources said invitations have been sent to all 41 NC MLAs and four Independent legislators backing the NC-led government for a meeting scheduled at the Chief Minister's Gupkar residence in Srinagar on June 3. Notably, no invitation has been extended to the Congress, which is an alliance partner in the government and has six MLAs in the Assembly.
Several legislators confirmed receiving invitations from the Chief Minister's Office for the meeting, which is expected to focus on governance issues, public service delivery, and feedback from elected representatives.
According to party insiders, the meeting comes against the backdrop of growing resentment among some ruling party MLAs, who have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of a few ministers. Legislators are said to have complained that their concerns regarding public issues are not receiving adequate attention from certain members of the Council of Ministers.
"The meeting will be a post-Eid-ul-Azha interaction, but governance and public welfare issues will also be discussed. The Chief Minister is expected to seek feedback from legislators on the functioning of departments and delivery of services to the people," a legislator said.
The invitation letter sent to the participants states that the meeting will deliberate on "matters of collective importance and critical issues concerning public welfare."
The four Independent legislators invited to the meeting are Choudhary Akram from Surankote, Pyare Lal Sharma from Inderwal in Doda district, Rameshwar Singh from Bani in Kathua district, and Muzaffar Iqbal Khan from Thanamandi in Poonch district, all of whom support the NC-led government.
The upcoming gathering will be the second major meeting of the ruling party in recent weeks. Earlier, a meeting of NC legislators, ministers, and senior party functionaries was held at the party headquarters, Nawa-i-Subh, in Srinagar under the chairmanship of NC president Farooq Abdullah. However, Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi, who has publicly voiced differences with the party leadership on several issues, was not invited to that meeting.
Political observers view the latest meeting as an effort by the Chief Minister to strengthen coordination within the ruling camp, assess governance challenges, and address concerns raised by legislators ahead of the upcoming political and administrative engagements in the Union Territory. |
