| Hackers targeting hosting systems, urgent cybersecurity advisory issued | | |  ATUL SHARMA

JAMMU, Aug 28: The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has issued an advisory warning individuals and organisations using cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) systems of potential cyberattacks that could result in unauthorised access, ransomware deployment, data theft and disruption of online services.
The advisory, issued by the National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (NCTAU) of I4C, urges users and system administrators to take immediate security measures to protect their hosting environments.
According to the advisory, compromised cPanel and WHM systems could provide attackers with unauthorised access to hosting management systems. Such access could potentially be exploited to deploy ransomware, steal sensitive information and disrupt websites and other online services.
I4C has advised citizens, organisations and website administrators to update cPanel and WHM systems to the latest patched versions as a priority.
Users have also been advised to restrict administrative access to trusted users and networks only. The advisory recommends enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for administrative accounts to provide an additional layer of protection against unauthorised access.
As part of preparedness against ransomware and other cyber incidents, organisations have further been advised to maintain secure offline backups of websites, databases and server configurations.
The warning comes amid reports of active exploitation of a critical vulnerability affecting cPanel and WHM systems. CERT-In has also issued a vulnerability note concerning the flaw, which could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to bypass authentication mechanisms.
I4C has urged users and organisations to treat the advisory seriously and ensure that their hosting infrastructure is properly patched and secured.
