JAMMU, Aug 28: Police have registered a case against Abid Nengroo, district general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Anantnag, for allegedly cheating a person on the pretext of securing a government job and facilitating permission to install tents at Pahalgam during the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra.
Nengroo is the third Kashmir-based BJP functionary to face a police case over allegations of cheating, fraud or related offences in different parts of the Valley in the past 15 days.
According to officials, the case was registered at Police Station Anantnag following a written complaint submitted by Waheed Ahmad Itoo, a resident of Aishmuqam who is presently staying at the GDC Boys Hostel in Khanabal.
Itoo alleged that Nengroo, a resident of Krandigam in Bijbehara, induced him by claiming that he could help arrange a government job as a Special Police Officer (SPO) in the Police Department. He further alleged that Nengroo promised to use his political influence to facilitate permission for installing tents at Pahalgam for Shri Amarnath Ji pilgrims.
According to the complaint, Itoo was allegedly induced to pay a total of Rs 8.25 lakh on the basis of these assurances.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, police registered an FIR under Sections 318(4) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Anantnag and initiated an investigation.
Police said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation. Anantnag Police also reiterated that strict legal action would be taken against anyone found involved in cheating, fraud or exploiting people through false promises of government employment or other official benefits.
The development comes days after police registered cases against two other BJP functionaries in Pulwama district in connection with separate allegations of fraud and extortion.
On August 18, police registered a case against BJP leader Aijaz Ahmed Shah, vice-president of the party's Kisan Morcha in Pulwama, over allegations that he took money from a person on the pretext of helping him in a police case.
An FIR was registered at Tral Police Station under Sections 420 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). As the alleged offence dates back to 2022, the case was registered under the IPC, which was replaced by the BNS in July 2024.
According to reports, the complainant alleged that Shah had taken money from him after assuring him that he would help in a police-related matter.
Officials said Shah had faced several similar cases in the past. According to police records cited in reports, eight cases have been registered against him at different police stations in Pulwama district since 2016. The latest case is reportedly the third registered against him this year.
Earlier, on August 14, police registered an FIR at Newa Police Post in Pulwama following a complaint against BJP leader Showkat Gayoor.
The complaint was filed by Mohammad Yaseen Ganie, who alleged that Gayoor threatened him with action under the Public Safety Act if his demands were not fulfilled.
Ganie accused the BJP leader of extortion, criminal intimidation, wrongful restraint, obstruction and harassment, besides allegedly making illegal demands in connection with work being carried out for the Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee in Barthana.
The complainant alleged that Gayoor demanded Rs 5 lakh as extortion money and claimed that he had already paid Rs 54,000 to the BJP leader in two instalments in November last year.
Following registration of the case, J&K BJP general secretary Mohammad Anwar Khan placed Gayoor under suspension from all organisational posts after consulting senior party leaders.
The latest case against Nengroo has added to the recent scrutiny of BJP functionaries in Kashmir. However, the allegations against all the accused remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings.
