Jammu, Sep 3: The mortal remains of Army soldier Ajay, a resident of Akhnoor in Jammu district, were recovered from the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, days after he went missing when a motorboat carrying Para Special Forces personnel capsized during a training exercise near the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana.
Ajay was among two soldiers who went missing after the training accident on September 1. The other missing soldier has been identified as Aryan Patil of Maharashtra.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 5 pm on September 1 when five soldiers of a Special Forces unit jumped from a Chinook helicopter onto a motorboat positioned in the Yamuna as part of a training exercise.
The boat reportedly failed to start and subsequently began taking in water. The soldiers, equipped with diving gear and life jackets, were forced to enter the river.
While three personnel managed to reach safety through the gates of the Western Yamuna Canal, Ajay and Patil could not be located.
The Army, assisted by local divers and rescue teams, launched an extensive search operation for the missing soldiers. The search was subsequently expanded downstream as rescue teams continued combing the river and adjoining areas.
After an intensive search lasting several hours, Ajay’s body was eventually recovered from the Yamuna in the Saharanpur area of Uttar Pradesh.
The death of the Akhnoor soldier has plunged his family, fellow soldiers and residents of the area into deep grief. Ajay was serving with 1 Para (Special Forces), an elite Army unit known for undertaking some of the country’s most challenging and high-risk military missions.
