| Maid of MLA’s wife runs Facebook news channel to insult ministers: Sakina Itoo drops a bombshell | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Sept 30: The Legislative Assembly witnessed a heated exchange on Wednesday when Social Welfare Minister Sakina Itoo said that while members were voicing concern over social media news channels, the maid of the wife of a sitting member was herself running a news page on Facebook, allegedly used to malign political opponents. She did not name the member.
Itoo urged the Speaker to bar legislators from carrying mobile phones into the House. She also asked that phones be kept out of the visitors’ gallery and that people who enter with phones posing as media be stopped.
The discussion began during Question Hour, when Bijbehara MLA Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri raised the problems caused by certain so-called journalists active on social media and called for a policy to regulate them. National Conference member Altaf Ahmad Wani backed the demand. He said that a few days ago, when he was taking out a Happydent, a self-styled journalist circulated a video claiming he was consuming a tobacco product.
Responding, Itoo said some political people were also part of the problem. Such social media “journalists,” she said, tarnish anyone’s reputation, and several colleagues promote them in one way or another.
She also recounted a personal experience. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, she said, is like an elder brother to her, and a video of the two talking inside the House was circulated on social media and presented in a misleading way. People who do this, she said, have no regard for the dignity of anyone’s daughters and daughters-in-law.
Itoo added that several legislators had brought in people to make reels of House proceedings, and reiterated that a maid of a member’s wife had set up a Facebook page or channel that was being misused. |
