| Jammu's first animal crematorium to offer dignified last rites for pets | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 30: In a relief for pet lovers and animal welfare groups, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) is set to open city's first small animal incinerator at Kot Balwal.
The much-needed facility is expected to become operational within a month and will provide people an option to give their pets and other small animals a dignified and respectful final farewell, JMC officials said.
Developed in response to repeated requests from pet owners and animal welfare workers, the facility will cater to animals weighing up to 100 kg, including household pets, stray animals and other small animals for which people wish to arrange proper last rites.
"We received many requests from people and pet lovers for a dedicated animal crematorium. Therefore, we have established a small animal crematorium facility," JMC veterinary officer Dr Divya Sharma told PTI Videos.
She said the facility is expected to be opened to the public within a month.
"At this facility, we can also provide the ashes of the animals to their owners, so that they can perform the final rites according to their wishes and in whatever manner they consider appropriate," Sharma said.
Once operational, the official said the JMC will announce the timings and other details through its official channels. "People will be able to obtain information through the JMC website, 'My Jammu app' and designated phone numbers.
She said the facility will be available not only to pet owners but also to those who have cared for or developed an attachment to stray animals and wish to give them a dignified farewell.
"Whether it is a stray animal, an Indian breed or a pet animal, anyone who wants to give an animal a dignified final farewell can contact us," Sharma said.
For many pet owners, the facility addresses a long-standing problem. Dogs, cats and other animals are increasingly considered members of the family, but until now there was no dedicated facility in Jammu for their cremation.
Vineet Sharma, a pet lover, said owners often struggled to find a suitable place for the burial of their dead pets.
"Pet lovers in Jammu treat their pets like family members. People care for them, love them and consider them an integral part of their families," he said.
Sharing his experience, Vineet said he too faced difficulties after the death of his dog sometime back.
"When my pet passed away, I could not find any proper place or facility where I could give it a dignified farewell...I had to use a friend's plot to perform the last rites," he said.
He said pet owners had to depend on informal arrangements, including travelling to the banks of the Tawi river or remote areas to bury their animals. |
