SRINAGAR, Aug 19: The PDP workers and some legislators have been mounting pressure on the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to resign in view of increasing attacks on their homes by the protestors in Kashmir.
Kashmir is tense since July 9, day after Burhan Wani was killed. During these days, there has been massive protests across the Valley and property worth crores of rupees have been vandalized by the angry mob.
Many people in the Valley have been blaming the ruling parties, the PDP and BJP for failing to deal with the situation.
"We are facing a huge pressure from the party workers to resign from the government," a senior PDP leader said. "There are also some PDP leaders who want Mehbooba Mufti to resign, but there is another faction who believe that we should remain in the government and to deal with the situation effectively," the PDP leader said.
Sources said many party workers have complained to the party leadership that they were being threatened by some people in various areas to resign from the party. "We don't have any security and our houses are being attacked. Ministers feel insecure to come out of their houses but we don't have any security and we can be attacked any time by the mob," a PDP worker from south Kashmir Pulwama, who has been associated with the party for many years said, but wished not to be named for fear of reprisal. "We are worried about ourselves and for our family members. Some people have been blaming us for the civilian killings as they believe our party is in the government for which we had campaigned in elections and participating in its activities," the PDP worker said.
During the last 43 days, many of the senior PDP leaders' houses have been attacked in the Valley. A petrol bomb was hurled at the house of PDP leader and education minister Naeem Akhtar in Parraypora area of the city earlier this month. Similarly, PDP MLA from Pulwama Mohammad Khalil Bhandh was also attacked and got seriously injured when his vehicle came under the attack of stone pelters. People on Thursday attacked the house of PDP legislator from Shopian Mohammad Yosuf Bhat during protests. There are reports houses of many mainstream leaders and their workers were attacked by the mob over these days.
Majority of ministers have either remained indoors or have left the Valley during the last 44 days fearing attacks from the mob. All these ministers and MLAs are carrying a posse of security men along with them but some party leaders are blaming them for failing to come out of their houses and reach out to the people. "There was a war of words between the party leaders in a meeting, blaming each other for mishandling the situation," a PDP insider said.
