Early Times Report

Udhampur, Aug 19: The Udhampur district hospital is alleged to be faced with acute shortage of emergency drugs and medical staff.
Official sources alleged that most of the posts were lying vacant in the hospital as a result of which it was facing problems in its smooth functioning.
Against the sanctioned strength of three surgeons, the hospital had only one, sources alleged, saying that instead of three child specialists, it had only two. While the post of ENT specialist was lying vacant, two physicians were attending more than a 100 patients every day.
"Though the hospital has sanctioned strength of two orthopaedicians, it has only one at present," sources claimed.
The hospital was also alleged to be short of injections needed for gastric and blood pressure related problems. Locals and doctors complain of non-availability of emergency medicines in the hospital . "We are not given medicines that find a mention on the display board fixed inside the hospital premises for general patients. We are asked to purchase medicines from the market, but the influential persons are given all the medicines," alleged Raghu Kumar, a patient.
"There are cockroaches and mosquitoes on water coolers, but the hospital administration does not bother to clean them. This is a matter of serious concern because the water is used by patients and thousands of visitors who come to hospital daily," said Shankar Singh.
"I was asked to get Hydrocortisone injection for my mother as she was suffering from blood pressure and allergic problem. Though the injection was shown available in the hospital record, it was not made available to me," alleged Arun Kumar.
Chief Medical Officer Chander Mohan admitted that there was shortage of medicines and staff and said he had brought the matter to the notice of higher authorities.
The medicines displayed on the hospital board would soon be made available to patients, he added. He did not give satisfactory reply to the presence of cockroaches and mosquitoes on the hospital's water coolers.
