Early Times Report

Srinagar, Dec 3 As Western Disturbances eluded the region, dry and chilly weather continued resulting in the increase in cold-related diseases in the Kashmir Valley, where night temperature witnessed further drop though the maximum temperature was above normal. However, Leh in Ladakh region continued to freeze after the minimum temperature recorded further drop and settled at minus 9.6 degree Celsius though in the higher reaches, including near borders, it was between minus 20 degree Celsius to minus 35 degree Celsius. A Met Department spokesperson said here this afternoon that there is no possibility of rain or snow and the weather will remain dry in Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours. Weather will remain dry and chilly during the subsequent two days, he said. Long queues of patients, particularly children and elderly persons, could be seen outside the medical shops, private clinics and hospital as cold-related diseases, including cough, chest infection, headache, fever and body ache have witnessed increase due to dry and cold weather. Doctors have advised people, particularly children and elderly persons, to avoid venturing out during morning and evening hours when the temperature goes down. Those suffering from heart and chest diseases, including asthma and other breathing problems are advised to remain indoors. Some people could be seen wearing masks to prevent any infection. However, despite chilly conditions, people are out on streets as the separatists have announced relaxation for the third successive weekend in the strike today and tomorrow in the valley, where life remained crippled since July 9. The Met spokesman said due to open sky during the night, the minimum temperature witnessed further drop and settled at minus 2.1 degree, more than two notches below normal, in summer capital, Srinagar. He said weather will be mainly clear with haze and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 15 degree Celsius, four notches above normal and minus 2 degree Celsius in Srinagar during the next 24 hours. People continued to shiver in Leh, where the minimum temperature recorded further drop and settled at minus 9.6 degree, freezing water bodies. The authorities are already providing drinking water to people through water tankers while in far-flung and remote areas, people are using spring water which remained warm during winter and cold in summer. Weather woes continued on the border where the temperature was between minus 20 degree Celsius to minus 35 degree Celsius. However, despite all odds and chilly weather conditions, troops remained on high alert on the borders to foil repeat of 1999 Kargil war when Pakistani intruders occupied all heights in Kargil and Drass sectors after Indian troops had withdrawn during winter as agreed by both the countries. Since then, Kargil war troops remained deployed to foil any infiltration attempt from across the border. The Met spokesperson said the sky will remain clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 10 degree Celsius and minus 8 degree Celsius respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh.
