Omar sheds tears at Frisalan, shut eyes to Dudu tragedy | Condolences of discrimination | | Abodh Sharma Jammu, Nov 29: Chief Minister's pictures showing him sharing the ordeal of the residents of Frisalan village in Pahalgam that faced a major inferno on Sunday last did help in his projection as a compassionate head of the government, but his indifference towards the Dudu tragedy that left 21 dead badly exposed regional bias within his dispensation. Dudu tragedy took place on the afternoon of Saturday last, the 24th of November, leaving 18 of a marriage party killed on the spot while 3 succumbed to their injuries in the next two days, but while the Chief Minister issued a customary statement of expression of grief on the loss of life, the NC leadership woke up to gory incident only three days later, issuing a statement to express their shock. None of his Ministers barring Minister for Health Sham Lal visited the injured in hospitals of Udhampur and Jammu and DDC Udhampur handed over a relief of Rs. 5000 to the NoK of each of deceased in the mishap. On the other hand, Frisalan mishap took place on Sunday, the 25th of November, in which close to 50 houses were gutted in devastating fire, but no loss of life was reported. The response of the Chief Minister and his Government to this mishap was entirely different. On the same day, Omar sent a team of Ministers and officers comprising Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmed and Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo to visit the spot, meet the affected families and assess the loss to the property. Mian Altalf announced on the spot that the government will provide assistance to the fire victims on the pattern of Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) and provide an immediate relief of Rs. 45000 rupees each. Next day morning, Omar himself accompanied by the Minister of Rural Development Ali Mohammad Sagar visited Frisalan to take personal account of the incident and get first hand appraisal of the magnitude of damage to the property and the status of help being provided to the sufferers by the district administration. Differences in the responses of the Government in two back to back tragedies suffered by people of two different regions speak volumes of mindset of regional discrimination prevalent within Omar's Government even in disaster. Dudu probably is not an NC vote bank and neither that of the PDP that it could threaten NC's political equations in any way as South Kashmir village of Frisalan probably could.
