Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 11: Kashmiri separatists, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Miraiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Aasiya Andrabi; Kashmiri parties, including the defeated and Valley-centric NC; the separatist-turned-politician Hakim Yaseen; fanatics and rabble-rousers like Er Rashid; many members of the so-called Kashmiri civil society, to mention only a few, have raised a banner of revolt against New Delhi and the hapless refugees from West Pakistan and threatened an agitation in case New Delhi granted citizenship rights to these refugees. A number of other organizations such as the Jamiat Ahlihadees Jammu & Kashmir (JAJK) too have taken the plunge to oppose the highly rational and humanitarian step who do not have the right to own immovable property in the state, to obtain jobs under the state government, to vote in the assembly and local bodies' elections, to enjoy bank loan facilities and the right to send their wards to the official higher educational institutions as well as technical and professional institutions despite the fact that they have been residing in different parts of Jammu province since 1947.
Not just this, while Er Rashid has already organized a demonstration against the New Delhi's well-meaning and well-intentioned decision, the APHC-M of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has decided to organize a seminar in Srinagar on January 12 to arouse anti-refugee and anti-New Delhi passions in the Valley with a view to forcing New Delhi to give up the idea of granting citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan.
The point is that all or nearly all those in Kashmir who are against India and fundamentally sectarian in their approach have joined hands both against the refugees from West Pakistan and New Delhi and opposed the suggestion that empowers the refugees and makes them dignified citizens of the state. All of them, without any exception, have said that the suggestion, if accepted, would change the demographic profile of the state and further dilute the Kashmir's distinct identity. Besides, all of them said that no Indian can be allowed to buy any property in the state or settle in the state. In other words, they have dismissed the Indians, including these refugees, who have the right to take part in the Lok Sabha elections, as foreigners.
Now that the hardliners in the Valley have raised their ugly head, it is time for New Delhi to assert its authority and grant the refugees all the citizenship rights which are available to the so-called state subjects in Jammu and Kashmir. New Delhi must not flinch; it has to defeat all the negative forces in the Valley to send a right message. They have to be taught a lesson. They just cannot be allowed to dictate terms like before. It is also time for New Delhi to distinguish between nationalists and anti-nationals and between liberals and fanatics and evolve and implement policies that isolate the anti-nationals and fanatics and promote the nationalists, liberals and those who do not discriminate between man and man on the ground of caste, creed and region. Isolation of the fanatics and anti-nationals is a must, as no state worth it name can tolerate the kind of activities the fanatics in Kashmir have been indulging in since 1947 despite the fact that they have been exercising all the rights all over India.
