Early Times Report

JAMMU, Feb 8: The National Conference (NC), Kashmir's premier political organization, is becoming more and more irrelevant with each passing day. It is being headed by a leader who, it appears, has made up his mind to destroy the party by allowing others to grab its own political space. The manner in which the NC working president and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah ate his words and offered support to the Congress candidate for the RajyaSabha seat, GhulamNabi Azad, who had attacked him, his government and his policies on the eve of and during and after the election campaign only vindicated those who held the view that "the NC bigwig was sitting on the ruins of the NC" and that "the NC would become a story of the past in case he continued to behave in the fashion he had been behaving since 2002".
Earlier, Omar Abdullah had tweeted to the effect that his father Farooq Abdullah should enter the RajyaSabha and he had tweeted after some Congress leaders sought the support of the NC in favour of GhulamNabi Azad. Besides, Omar Abdullah had umpteen times lambasted Azad for his charge that he was responsible for the defeat of the Congress party both in the 2014 LokSabha and Assembly elections. Many political observers have opined that "by offering support to the Congress candidate, Omar Abdullah further damaged his own party". It needs to be underlined that that the NC has more MLAs as compared with the Congress. The NC has 15 MLAs and the Congress only 12 and still Omar Abdullah offered support to the Congress party. Reports suggest that many in the NC were not happy with his decision. A report on Saturday said: "Sources within the NC said that some leaders had pressed for fighting for the victory of party candidates instead of supporting Azad".
Critics of Omar Abdullah do make a point when they question his decision to offer support to the Congress and assert that "he is systematically destroying his party. It is a fact that the NC has been declining ever since 2002, when it contested the assembly elections under the leadership of Omar Abdullah. In 2002, the NC could win only 28 seats, as against its 1996 tally of 75 seats. In 2008, the NC could also win only 28 seats, despite the fact that it was in the opposition for six long years.
That he refused to lean any lesson from its 2002 and 2008 defeats and that he didn't conduct himself in the required manner as Chief Minister could be seen from the fact that in the 2014 Assembly elections the NC could win only 15 seats - 12 out of 46 from Kashmir and 3 out of 37 from Jammu. Besides, the NC under his leadership lost all the three LokSabha seats in 2014. Not only this, he himself lost the election in the Sonawar Assembly constituency and won the Beerwah assembly seats by a slender margin of about 900 votes. The point is that the NC under his leadership has become week and unpopular to the extent that today it has no representation either in the LokSabha or in the RajyaSabha. Only till the other day, the NC had three members in the LokSabha and two members in the RajyaSabha. It is difficult to say if Omar Abdullah would change his style of functioning. It appears, he is the replica of AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi who has not clicked despite being in politics for many years now.
