Modi's to upgrade defence sector | | | Reiterating his resolve to end India's dependence on defence imports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised a conducive environment for manufacturers, including a discrimination-free tax system, and asked foreign firms not to be just "sellers" but "strategic partners". Modi has stated that while the country needs to increase its defence preparedness and modernise its forces due to security challenges that were well known, it should lay emphasis on manufacturing 70 per cent of military hardware domestically in next five years and remove the tag of being number one importer of defence equipment.Modi made it clear that developing domestic defence industry "is at the heart of the 'Make in India' programme" and that is why he is implementing various measures for building an industry that will have room for everyone - public sector, private sector and foreign firms.Modi has told foreign entrepreneurs that for too many of them India is a major business opportunity with the reputation as the largest importer of defence equipment in the world.Since India continues to be number one importer in defence sector Prime Minister has, that too rightly, invited foreign firms to invest in the defence sect or in India which alone could help him in realising his dream project of "Make in India." Prime Minister voiced deep concern over the way India continued to spend "tens of billions of dollars on acquisitions from abroad", Modi said government's focus is to reduce imports and develop domestic defence industry with a sense of mission which "is at the heart of our Make in India programme".Modi expressed confidence that India will emerge as a major global centre for defence industry. Modi said a strong defence industry would not only make the country more secure but also make it more prosperous. Modi has pointed out that in India, the defence industry in the government sector alone employs nearly 200,000 workers and thousands of engineers and scientists. This indicates that the defence industry has a great potential for tackling India's unemployment problem.Once foreign companies and firm invested in the defence indust ry in India for manufacturing highly sophisticated military hardware it would further resolve unemployment problem in the country and help India to be self-sufficient in varied types of equipment required by the Armed forces. Well Modi is,on one hand, keen to promote cordial ties with all major countries, particularly with the neighbouring countries,on the other,he is equally eager to upgrade the defence sector which could guarantee India's security against the machinations of a couple of neighbouring countries, including China and Pakistan. He seems to have become wiser from the state of economy in Pakistan which is in shambles. It is so because the establishment in Islamabad has not been taking in hands steps for promoting local production in various sectors, including the sector of defence. It is so because Pakistan has, right from its inception, banked on imports from the US and China. Since the middle of 70's China has been providing liberal military and non-military aid to Pakistan and Islamabad believes that as a result of liberal financial assistance there was no need for Pakistan to focus on "Make in Pakistan".This has created energy and economic crisis and now, after having bartered away its land to China for setting up its military bases,Islamabad has been assured by Beijing that it would help Pakistan in importing nuclear power reactors for meeting energy crisis. But India wants to be self-sufficient in the sectors of defence, agriculture, energy and industry. There lies India's redemption. |
