Why was H1N1 threat ignored? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 19: It has now come to fore that the authorities took the threat posed by the deadly H1N1 virus in Kashmir lightly since October last year. The authorities from the Health department and SKIMS while addressing a press conference yesterday admitted that the valley had around 70 infected people. They also admitted that the hospitals had been receiving the patients since October 2014. Concerned quarters have accused the SKIMS authorities of negligence for their failure to shift the patients to isolation wards. They have been held liable for playing a vital role in spread of the disease. Had proper care and precautions been taken on time, the disease could have been prevented from spreading, believe the people. However, sources in Health Department told Early Times that the government must have intimated on time but nobody paid any heed. "The administration was busy making preparations for assembly polls," they said. Pertinent to mention here that the state has one H1N1 testing lab and the series of patients reported to have respiratory ailments could have been tested for the deadly virus. It has come to fore that as many as 50 patients were treated at SKIMS in the last months of 2014. Dr Parvaiz Koul who heads the Internal and Pulmonary Medicine, SKIMS and Principal Investigator for the Influenza Project in Kashmir has stressed need for awareness about the disease. According to him sensationalizing the news serves no purpose and proves counter-productive. He ruled out consumption o chicken and mutton as a cause of the disease. "The people must follow the dos and don'ts and watch out for the symptoms,' he said. |
