Resident doctors rue unpreparedness in handling Swine Flu epidemic | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 22 : In view of the ongoing Swine Flu epidemic in Jammu and unpreparedness of the health authorities including Directorate of Health Services (DHS) Jammu and administration of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu, the threat of strike by main work force of GMC&H looms large. Dr Neeraj Sharma, President of the Resident Doctors Association in GMC&H Jammu and Associated Hospitals in a statement said that for the first 72 hours since Wednesday last week hospital administration is just sleeping on the issue of providing N95 masks to the doctors and paramedical staff of the hospitals. "I personally called both the Medical Superintendents of GMC&H and Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) telephonically," Sharma said. "While Dr Romesh Gupta, Medical Superintendent of SSH outrightly said he has no directive to issue N95 masks to the hospital staff whereas DR RR Pal his counterpart in GMC&H admitted that he doesn't has adequate number of N95 masks and Tamiflu (oseltamavir) tablets and also that same are expected to arrive by Monday evening or so," he added. He further said that last evening some emergency and OPD doctors purchased N95 masks from market at exorbitant prices from their own pockets. The risk of infection to hospital staff particular innocent Doctors in OPDs and emergency looms large. But to the utter frustration the hospital administration has failed to implement swine flu guide lines. Only on Sunday morning one mask each was provided to doctors on duty in casualty that also after threat of flash strike by RDA. The total protective duration of N95 mask is only 10 hours after it has to be changed so at least 150 masks are required by emergency and OPD doctors in GMC&H alone while people in SMGS Hospital require 90 to 100 of them and in SSH about 100 N95 are required in 24 hours. Dr Neeraj Sharma said," We are frustrated that what are the reasons the hospital administration is putting the lives of its main work force the Resident Doctors at risk." "We also appeal to the general public that all cold and cough is not swine flu and please do not come to hospital unnecessarily and risk your life," he added. |
