Eyewitnesses said that a group of locals came under the attack by arrogant sumo drivers . They said that the drivers attacked locals with Kangris and stones during which several sustained injuries including drivers. Soon after the incident senior police officials rushed to spot and brought situation under control, a police officer told Early Times. Injured where shifted to nearby hospital for first aid, locals informed. Iqbal Ahmad Najar (Student) and Nisar Ahmad Bhat (driver) where identified among the injured. Locals accused Sumo drivers of resorting to monopoly on the roads and creating hurdles in the smooth plying of traffic particularly of mini buses on the route. "Around 60% population of the village is living below poverty line (BPL) so they can't afford fair of the sumos which is too high. Keeping this thing in mind a few days ago we approached DC Anantnag and requested him to permit mini buses on the route via Bijbehara and Mattan." Aijaz Ahmad, a resident said. He said that sumo drivers thrashed a mini bus driver and threatened him of dire consequences If they (Mini bus drivers) continued to ply their vehicles on the route. "When we asked sumo drivers why they have threatened Mini bus drivers, they attacked us with Kangris and stones and injured several people." Locals alleged. However the drivers refuted the allegations of the locals and said that the issue was between mini bus drivers and them not with the general public. "If administration has permitted mini buses to ply on the route we don't have any problem at all. Issue between two drivers which we were trying to sort out peacefully but a group of youth attacked us and damaged our vehicles." Manzoor Ahmad, Dargah Sakhi Sumo Stand president said. Informed sources said that sumo drivers have filed a complaint with police after which police detained few youngsters of the village. After the reported detention of youth villagers again held protest. Meanwhile, locals again approached administration after which ARTO Anantnag formally allowed mini buses to ply on Khiram route via Bijbehara and Mattan. |
