ST status for Rajouri-Poonch districts | JKPPM pins high hope on Mufti led new state government | | early times report Rajouri , Feb 28: Leaders of Pahari Speaking community who have been struggling for Schedule Status (ST) Status for the community have pined high hopes from the new government being headed by Mufti Mohd Saeed from March 1st. "We have been deceived by our own MLAs (MLAs from Pahari community in last Assembly) as they did nothing to get the ST status for the community during their 6 years terms. They were taught lesson in 2014 Assembly elections and Paharis openly supported People Democratic Party (PDP) and BJP candidates" said Shahbaz Khan and MA Sagar, office holders of JKPPM. J&K Pahari People Movement (JKPPM) leaders have been hoping that the new government will respect the sentiments of members of Pahari speaking community and will try to fulfill its long pending demand of ST Status. Shahbaz Khan, chief executive, JKPPM have appealed to Mufti Mohd Saeed to include the issue in the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) of BJP-PDP coalition government. In this connection a joint meeting of leaders of various Pahari organizations was held recently at Mendher under the president ship of MA Sagar, provincial president JKPPM. "Youth from Pahari community were the worst victims in the past as well as at present as they have no reservation. In order to provide them guaranteed future it is important to provide ST status for the Pahari community" said Shahbaz Khan. He added that Gujjars?Bakerwals sharing the same inhabitations, culture, customs, festivals etc with the Paharis. But they are enjoying the benefits of ST status for the last more than 25 years and since then Pahari are struggling for it. Pertinently, in 1989 State government had sent a list of 7 tribes, including Argone of Leh, Sheena Dard, Gaddi, Sippi, Balti, Gujjars and Bakerwals and Paharis (on number 1 in the list) to the then Union Government to grant ST status. "Except Paharis all other communities were included in ST Status as some anti Pahari forces played a negative role and misguided the then leadership" said Shahbaz Khan and added that since then Paharis have been struggling for their genuine rights. He added no doubt, successive governments have been providing facilities to the students from Pahari Community, including free hostel facilities, free education, scholarships, mobile schools, reservations in medical, technical institutions etc. "But our main aim is to get share (reservation) in paramilitary forces, State Recruitment Board (in government jobs)" said Vijay Kochhar, provincial general secretary JKPPM and Abdul Qadar, state president Pahari Youth Federation (PYF). They added that some Gujjar-Bakerwal leaders for their vested interests have been working against ST Status for the Pahari Community and being an agents of anti-national and anti-social forces they are also misguiding the Gujjars and are hell bent upon to draw a line of confrontation between these two communities sharing same habitations, culture, festivals etc. These leaders asked the Pahari Youth and other Pahari Community Organisations to come under the umbrella of J&K Pahari Culture and Welfare Forum and JKPPM to continue their joint and effective struggle in case the newly constituted State Government fail to recognize their long pending demand of ST Status. |
