GMCH shaken after H1N1 takes 5 lives, 22 found positive in Jammu region | Proposal for high tech lab sent to GoI, Microbiology Deptt running with outdated labs | | Arun Singh
Jammu, Feb 28: The death of a patient suffering from swine flu has exposed the unpreparedness of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) administration to handle the situation. As 22 other patients are found positive, the administration has woken up from a deep slumber and sent a proposal for setting up of High Tech Lab in the hospital to Government of India (GoI) for its sanction so that tests related to infectious diseases could be done here. The GMCH Microbiology Department, which primarily examines microbes and microbial diseases i.e microbes, small organisms that require microscopic tools for visualization, encompass bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, has no facility to conduct Swine Flu tests."The department is running with outdated labs unable to conduct H1N1 test. These tests can only be done with Applied Biosystems 7500 Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Systems but the department has its outdated version which is capable only for conducting tests like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV etc." they said."Despite knowing the fact that Swine flu has now become an annual phenomena for the last 5-6 years, the GMCH, as well as Microbiology Department, did not take any concrete steps to establish High Tech labs to conduct such tests," they said, adding that presently it is taking 6-8 days to get reports of the test which are being sent to National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) situated in New Delhi.Had such a high tech lab been in the GMCH, the report could have been got in 24 hours, sources said. After waking up from deep slumber, the department has now taken the initiative by sending a proposal to GoI for setting up High Tech Labs in GMCH, they said.Surprisingly, hospitals in neighbouring states including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have these facilities since long ago but Jammu and Kashmir which has been conferred with No 1 state award in Health Sector has no facility. When contacted, GMC Principal, Dr Ghanshyam Dev Gupta said, "We sent a proposal of High Tech Labs and allied facilities to GoI a week ago. This includes isolation wards with ten rooms, two wards, Air treatment systems, air purification systems and latest labs for conducting all types tests related to infectious diseases." He informed that the objective was to get a permanent and independent system at GMCH for handling such cases in future. |
