Today is a historic day for BJP | J&K Government | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 28: The BJP till May 2014 was not considered a major political player, notwithstanding the fact that it played a significant role in the history of integration of J&K into India between 1948 and May 2014. That the BJP used to have an insignificant presence in the state legislature could be seen from the fact that it and its earlier incarnations Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Praja Parishad were never represented in the J&K Legislative Council and that it used to have members in the Legislative Assembly whose number ranged from one to eight. It was for the first time in 1996 that the BJP won the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat. It created history both in 1998 and 1999 when it won both the Lok Sabha seats in Jammu province, including the Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat. The BJP could not win any Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections. What was the strength of the BJP in the Legislative Assembly between 1996 and 2014? In 1996, it won eight seats. In 2002, the BJP could win just one seat -- the Nagrota Assembly constituency. It was in 2008, that the BJP crossed the double-digit mark; it won eleven seats. The year 2014 turned out to be great year for the BJP and the credit for the splendid performance of the BJP in the state goes to former BJP national president Rajnath Singh (presently Union Home Minister), Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit shah and their team of committed workers. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP won three Lok Sabha seats - two from Jammu and the Lone Ladakh Lok Sabha seat and obtained more than 32 per cent of the total votes polled. The BJP got th highest number of votes. One of the MPs Jitendra Singh became Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office. And in the Assembly elections held between November and December 2014, the BJP won 25 seats - all from Jammu province. It emerged as the second largest party in the Assembly after the PDP, which won three seats more as compared to the BJP. The NC and the Congress, which were in the driver's seat, could win 15 and 12 seats, respectively. In February 2015, the BJP for the first time sent its one representative in the Rajya Sabha and two to the State Legislative Council. It is likely to have six more seats in the Legislative Council in the next few days and one more MLA (nominated) in the Legislative assembly. More importantly, the BJP will have its representatives in the Legislative Council from all the three regions. It will not be an ordinary political development. Had anyone ever expected that the BJP would become part of the J&K Government? None. But it has happened. The BJP and the PDP have joined hands to form the government with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of the PDP as Chief Minister and Nirmal Singh of the BJP as Deputy Chief Minister. It's no wonder that the BJP leaders, workers and cadres in the state and elsewhere are in a celebration mode. After all, the BJP has become part of the government in a state where the Muslims constitute an overwhelming majority in Kashmir, Hindus constitute majority in Jammu and Buddhists constitute majority in Ladakh. Now that the BJP has become a major political force in the state, it is time for its leadership to deliver and expand further its support-base by associating itself with the people's aspirations, needs and requirements. It is a must. For, the today's electorate in the country is highly politically conscious. |
