Drabu's maiden budget evokes interest from one and all | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 21: As the Finance Minister, Haseeb A Drabu readies to present his maiden budget in the assembly, people have attached high hopes from it saying that this year's financial statement would reflect the true aspirations of common masses. People affected by the devastating flood of September 2014 expect that some provision of further financial relief is kept for them in the budget for 2015-16. These people say the relief amount sanctioned so far is much below par and much more needs to be done by the state government in this regard. "In most of the cases the compensation amount has been very less and it would not satiate the demands of affected people. The state government should come forward in this regard and hopefully the budget would show the direction. Allocation in the budget for flood affected people would go a long way in inculcating confidence among the people," said Mohammad Ramzan, a resident of Noorbagh, Srinagar. Not only common masses, the traders are also quite upbeat that the budget would come to their help since they suffered huge losses due to the flood. These traders say that it would take years for them to come out of the trouble created by the flood. They exuded confidence that suggestions put forward in pre-budget consultations would be honoured by the Finance Minister. "Traders more so those belonging to the lower strata suffered numerous losses in the flood. Since then they are moving from pillar to post so that there is some light at the end of tunnel in form of financial help. Only a handful of businessman had got insured their stock and as such most of the traders suffered great losses since their stocks were not insured," said Hilal Ahmad, a trader. For the man on street the budget expectations are not less as well and they presume that better things are in store. Reduction in local taxes on commodities more so those used on daily basis would give a feeling to the common masses that the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed led coalition government believes in giving relief to common people. "In the past it has been observed that budget is merely a financial statement where the emphasis on zero deficit. For a common man the budget is a jugglery of numerical and there is nothing for him in it. Hopefully, this is not repeated this time around and the budget is meaningful for the common masses. If there is reduction in prices of essentials of life one can say that Drabu has done a good job. At the end of the day people want decent living with sufficient savings," said Parvez Ahmad, a government employee. The Finance Minister would be presenting his maiden budget on Sunday with expectations that there would be something in it for the every section of the society. It remains to be seen how for Drabu would be able to satisfy the needs and aspirations of the common masses through the financial statement for 2015-16. |
