Trip to Kashmir becomes costlier, NHAI starts charging toll | | | Shiv Dev Thakur
Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 21 : The journey on National highway within the state from Jammu-Srinagar to and fro is expensive now as the National Highway Authority of India started charging money from the travellers as toll tax with the almost 80% completion of the ambitious project of NHAI which was under construction from past few years in Jammu and Kashmir. This project was started with an aim to free flow of traffic on Jammu Srinagar Highway as the traffic on the highway was the main problem causing Jams and Accidents. According to reports, the people of state who waited anxiously for the project are now feeling the punch in their purse as the highway from Jammu to Udhampur reached its completion and is almost 80 % completed. The daily travellers rued that the NHAI is charging money even before the completion of the project and is contradicting the new statement of Nittin Gadkari, Minister of Road and Transport which is " NHAI will charge toll only after the completion of entire project". "No doubt that the Jammu-Udhampur Road Widening process was likely to be completed soon and is 80 % complete, but the NHAI is charging toll even before the completion of the project", said the daily travellers. " The authorities will charge the toll tax only after the completion of the whole project and it will take some time still and the charges are decided yet", said officials of NHAI few months before. Project Director (NHAI) R P Singh when contacted hopefully said that the Jammu-Udhampur Road Widening as 80 % complete is opened now and the authorities started charging toll tax . He further assured that the whole road will be hopefully opened shortly within few weeks for the vehicular movement as the project was delayed due to Land Accuisition problems at various sites. He again said, " the contracts signed earlier had provision that authorizes NHAI to charge toll after the 70% completion of the project, however the new rules framed recently say that the toll can be charged only the 100% completion of the whole project". |
