Twin terror attacks show Pak's mischief potential | | | When two terrorists attacked the Army camp at Samba on Saturday morning, it was the second attack during the last 24 hours, thereby indicating that terrorists, trained in camps across the border, were planning to trigger violence so as to derail political and security stability. Militants opened fire and lobbed grenades at an Army camp on the Jammu-Pathankot Highway in Samba district. The entire area was cordoned off by the Army and the police and exchange of fire continued for a couple of hours indicating the level of preparedness with which militants had tried to target the Army camp. However, militants failed to repeat the September 26, 2013 incident when the three terrorists sneaked into the Army camp after gunning down the soldiers who guarding the entrance. It was after thorough search and extended exchange of fire that both the militants were killed as was the case during the Friday's attack on Rajbagh Police station in Kathua where also two militants were killed. And in the Samba attack three soldiers and one civilian were injured. The civilian who was passing by the area, fell off his cycle during the firing and was injured. Whether the two militants who attacked the Army camp at Samba were part of the group that attacked the police station in Kathua is not as important as the overall plan of Pakistan supported terrorists on derailing peace in Jammu and Kashmir. When the three terrorists had attacked the Rajbagh police station and later the Army camp at Samba in september 2013 in which 10 people, including one Army officer and three militants, were killed had reportedly cross into Kathua from across the Internal Border which is less than 20 Kms from the town. At that stage the Army had denied recent infiltration of militants but field reports had indicated that the twin strikes by the terrorists were the handiwork of fresh infiltrators. And the two attacks, one on the police station at Rajbagh in Kathua, and the other at the Samba Army camp, during the last two days, seem to have been carried out by those militants who had sneaked into Jammu recently. Well credit needs to be given to the Army for having fortified the Samba Army camp after the 2013 attack. And it was this aletness on the part of the Army which prevented the two militants from sneaking into the camp which could have resulted in major loss of lives. The terror strikes during the last two days calls for reviewing the entire border management with emphasis on the need for upgrading the security grid on the LOC and on the IB. Providing logistic support to militants for infiltrating into the Indian territory the Pakistani Army is trying to widen the gulf between Islamabad and New Delhi. On one hand Islamabad is making strong pleas for resumption of bilateral talks, on the other the Army in Pakistan is triggering trouble on the border either through ceasefire violations or through helping militants in crossing into Jammu and Kashmir. Yes, India has been repeating its announcements telling Pakistan that talks and terror cannot coexist. What needs to be done to tame Pakistan is to strengthen the border management so that the level of ingress was reduced to zero. In addition to this whenever Pakistani Army and the Rangers resort to ceasefire violations each violations should be retaliated with full fury and force which would force Pakistan to let its guns fall silent. Yes, the official agencies, besides the extremists in Pakistan and Occupied Kashmir are worried over the marked improvement in the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir which also contributed to a hassle free and incident free completion of Lok Sabha and Assembly election. Another worry on the part of state and non-state actors in Pakistan is the high polling percentage in these t wo elections. Hence these state and non-state actors want to derail peace. These agencies have renewed their patronage to separatists in the Kashmir valley after they have realized that separatists have lost their teeth which was evident from the way their calls for poll boycott were not responded by people. All this calls for added measures for toning up security grid. |
