Srinagar, Mar 23 : After massive loss to Orchardists/Farmers over the years due to use of substandard pesticides and fertilizers, state government taking serious note of roots of Mafia and illegal means exposed by Early Times from last three years is all set to set up Pesticide RegulationAuthority to Monitor Supply of Pesticides to Jammu and Kashmir.
In its Maiden budget presented by Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu, state government today said that in order to check supply of substandard pesticides and fertilizers to Jammu and Kashmir, it will set up one 'Pesticide Regulation Authority' which will approve and monitor all the pesticides that go into Jammu and Kashmir and will also approve any reputed international firm to set up a unit in the valley where most of this distress has been felt over the years due to use of Substandard pesticides and Fertilizers supplied by Mafia unchecked.
According to Experts, Pesticide Regulation Authority is actually a board of experts having scientific knowledge and access to laboratories at one place within the state preferably in Kashmir where most of the Pesticides supplied from outside the state is used to check all kinds of Pesticides supplied to Jammu and Kashmir and recommend for Orchardists on time. Experts said that after regulation board is set up, only pesticides which fall under pesticide act of India 1968 and F.C.O 1985 will be allowed to supply to Jammu and Kashmir and recommended on time for Orchardists to use and therefore supply of substandard pesticides will itself come to an end. The government in its budget today also introduced 'Tree Spray Oil' supplied in large quantity to Jammu and Kashmir as an agriculture product @ zero percent tax rate. Pertinently Early times has been carrying series of stories with all the fair details and is exposing roots and illegal means employed by Politically Backed Mafia supplying substandard Pesticides and Fertlizers to Jammu and Kashmir from last three years despite many threat from Mafia associated with the illegal trade.
The Mafia exercise so much influence that even Ministers and top officials wouldrefuse to talk on the issue and also tried their best indirectly to motivate Early Times not to carry such stories.
It is pertinent to mention as per official figures 2500 MT of various kinds of fertilizers were supplied to valley, besides 900 lakh liters of spray oil, 90 MT of pesticides and 17230 liters of insecticides, However according tocredible Sources pesticides and Fertilizers available in markets were allowed by officials concerned without checking their nature in laboratories before Farmers could use them in their Orchards.
Sources said that all varieties of Pesticides and Fertilizers including first tree spray of this season supplied to Kashmir of Different companies like Fil Industries, Rallies India, TaTa Chemical, Syngenta, Bayor, Cheminova and Anu Products having an approximate annual turnover of Rupees 30 to 40 Crores from Jammu and Kashmir were allowed to Store, Sale and Purchase without testing them in Laboratories and it seems impossible whether concerned department would now check the nature of Pesticides and Fertilizers supplied as the testing Labs at Lal Mandi Srinagar were completely washed away by Floods of Last year. |
