Omar forgets he couldn't get back power projects in 6-yrs | Creates furore in House, tries to hide behind his failures; sheds crocodile tears | | Fazal Khan/ Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 27: The former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a mockery of himself by leading an anti-Government protest at the Floor of the House in Jammu on Friday. Omar created furore in the house after reports about Union Power Ministry saying no to transfer of the power projects, owned by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), to Jammu and Kashmir surfaced. "Your CMP (Common Minimum Programme) says will ensure return of power projects; Governor's address also says the same. This deceit won't do," Omar said as NC legislators stormed into the well of the House. The National Conference legislators could be seen waving copies of a local English newspaper while pointing out to the statement of Union Power Minister, Piyush Goyal that NHPC power projects cannot be handed over to Jammu & Kashmir government for varied reasons. Kashmir watchers were amused by the hue and cry raised by Omar and his party in the House. "When National Conference was in power from 2008 to 2014 its leaders, including the former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, made tall claims that negotiations with the Central government over handing over these power projects to JK are in final stages but all these assertions proved to be a damp squib," said an analyst. He said Omar storming the well of the House and seeking answer from the PDP-BJP dispensation, which is just 27-days old, about why it can't get the power projects transferred is a "big joke." "It's strange that Omar couldn't get these power projects back in six years and he expects the new dispensation to do so within one month," the analyst said. (He (Omar) failed to impress upon the central government to honour the recommendations of Rangarajan Committee for handing over the power projects to the state government." Another critic while talking to Early Times said, "Omar is trying to hide behind his failures and is making all the possible attempts to prove that he is not the only one who failed. By creating uproar in the house Omar wanted to celebrate what he considered as his first victory. It seems Omar wants to make people believe that the present dispensation has failed to get back the power projects and the Common Minimum Programme (CMP) between PDP and BJP is a farce." "Omar is now shedding 'crocodile tears' in order to get some sympathy from the common masses, but he may not be successful in his 'endeavour'. He could not get back the power projects during his tenure as Chief Minister despite the fact that the party in power at that time in New Delhi was very friendly towards him," the critic opined "The former chief minister is living in a fool's paradise. Time only would prove how far would the present dispensation go in fulfilling the promises it has made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Omar before raising hue and cry should look at his track record and his dismal performance as the Chief Minister," the critic added. He said when Omar was in power he just made tall claims and failed to implement any of his promises which he had made to people. "Congress and NC ruled JK without any CMP and agreed to disagree on most of the issues which surfaced during their rule," the critic added. Recalling the statements of the senior Congress leader and minister in Omar's cabinet Taj Mohiuddin on seeking return of power projects from the centre, the critic said, "Taj had said that state government would buy back the power projects from the NHPC and would go to any extent to ensure that these projects are returned to the state. For six years he did great lip service and kept on giving hollow assurances. It seems Omar has forgotten that he and his ministers fed people by indulging in mere rhetoric." A PDP leader said, "Omar has forgotten that JK power projects were gifted to NHPC by his father Dr Farooq Abdullah when he was the Chief Minister of the state." Pertinently, Omar stood exposed on yet another issue in the recent past. Omar had accused Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of failing to release the people lodged in various jails both within and outside the state. He said that PDP has virtually surrendered the interests of state to Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for the lust of power. The NC Working President left no stone unturned in launching a scathing attack on PDP after the release of former militant commander turned separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat. If Omar opposed the release of Masarat how come he has become the sympathizer of separatists and the people serving detention in different jails? He needs to clarify his own stand and that of his party. While PDP Patron and Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed believes in battle of ideas by releasing the prisoners having no criminal charges, Omar on the other side believes in time and again detention of separatist leaders. His father Dr. Farooq Abdullah had one suggested bombing of Pakistan and killing of the people lodged in various jails so that space is created for new people to be lodged there. The 'dual' faced policy of National Conference stands exposed before the masses, but there are some people within the party who believe that all is not lost. These legislators are looking for some opening so that the people are 'fooled' yet again. |
