BJP's U-turn on Article 370 | Bandookwali Hina Bhat | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 28: Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy is not happy with the top leadership of his party. His grouse against it is that it has been compromising its stand on Article 370 and Jammu and Kashmir to pamper such Kashmiris as Hina Bhat. Only the other day, he tweeted: "Investigation I find that Mufti is relying on Article 370 Bandookwali Hina Bhat to deliver BJP on a platter". This tweet explained many things. One, it showed that the BJP changed its stand on Article 370 only to keep Hina Bhat in a good humour. Hina Bhat joined the BJP only a few months ago and contested the assembly election from Amirakadal constituency only to lose her security deposit. It bears recalling that Hina Bhat November 14, 2014, when the election process in the state was on, had threatened that she, along with other Kashmiris, would pick up gun if Article 370 was scrapped. "We are focused on the Assembly elections to accomplish 'Mission 44'. We are not talking about Article 370 and its abrogation. The Article will not be touched and it is not in BJP's manifesto to scrap the Article," she had said. She had also reiterated her stand on Article 370 on December 23, 2014, the day election results were declared. She would be the "first to pick up a gun" if Article 370 of the Constitution, she had said, adding on December 23 that "I don't regret my statement" and that "I don't regret anything that I said. She made the second statement while talking to NDTV 24X7 on December 23. Hina Bhat got vindicated when the BJP released its Vision Document and not its election manifesto. While the BJP manifesto had reportedly talked about Article 370, the Vision Document had not, thus suggesting that the BJP leadership didn't release the manifesto to toe her line. It would not be out of place to mention here that Hina Bhat had also slapped a polling officer during voting, alleging massive rigging in the constituency, and warned that the "rigged polling will give birth to another Salahuddin". Syed Salahuddin - born Mohammed Yusuf Shah - was the candidate of the Muslim United Front for Amirakadal in the 1987 elections. Separatist leader Yasin Malik was his polling agent. Salahuddin lost the election to a National Conference candidate Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah amid allegations of rigging. Salahuddin was said to have been jailed following his vociferous protests and after his release, he joined the Hizbul Mujahideen and went on to become one of the most wanted militants in Kashmir. Hina Bhat's father Mohammad Shafi Bhat represented the Amirakadal constituency in 1996 and was MP from the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency as a National Conference candidate. All this suggests that all is not well with the BJP and that the BJP is divided house. That a person of the stature of Subramanian Swamy is taking on the BJP top brass only proves that. Only a few days ago, BJP veteran and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani had also expressed his unhappiness over the manner in which the BJP was dealing with Jammu and Kashmir and urged the party leadership not to change its stand on the state. |
