Struggle for AIIMS enters a new phase | Today's bandh is against BJP | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 23: The people of Jammu region are again on a warpath. This time their target is neither the Congress nor the NC against whom they observed innumerable bandhs to force them to concede their popular demands, including the establishment of University of Jammu, establishment of an engineering college and a medical college, establishment of Mata Vaishno Devi university or Agriculture University or Central University or creation of more districts in Jammu province. Peoples Democratic Party, which is leading the coalition government in the state, is also not the target of the people of Jammu region. This time their target is BJP and BJP alone, which has been in the state government since March 1, 2015. Very interestingly, the NC and the Congress too have taken the plunge to expose the BJP and its "anti-Jammu" policies. They, like the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CII), transporters associations, members of legal fraternity, student organizations, Jammu State Morcha, Dogra Kranti Dal, Sikh Unity Forum, Jammu Province People's Front and many other feeling-aggrieved and badly let down groups -- social and political -- have all extended support to the bandh call given by the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) to lodge a strong protest against the BJP, which, according to all of them, has subverted the Jammu mandate by handing over everything, including the sanctioned All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), on a platter to Kashmir. If one goes by the developments which unfolded in Jammu on Wednesday and today, then it can be said with full authority that the Fridaybandh in Jammu could be a massive affair. But this would not be the end of the movement; it would be the beginning of it in the real sense of the term. The movement which the JKNPP started after March 18 in its own way and which has got the support of all or almost all could culminate into a mass movement and the country would then witness the kinds of protests it witnessed during the Durbar Movement, during the MBBS-BDS and Mata Vaishno Devi and Agriculture University movement, during the Central University Jammu movement and so on. During all these movements, which were all successful, the agitating people of Jammu had brought the state governments to their knees. The state governments, which resisted the movements with full state power for days and moths together, had to finally yield and concede the popular demands of the people of Jammu region. The demand for AIIMS as being put forth by all the non-BJP forces, social groups, business community, transporters and so on, is genuine. It was none other than Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who had announced AIIMS for Jammu on February 28. It was MoS in the PMO Jitendra Singh who had congratulated Jaitley almost the same time in the Lok Sabha for his announcement. It was, in fact, the Lok Sabha commitment. It is difficult to understand why the BJP surrendered AIIMS and everything to Kashmir. By doing what it did on March 1 and has been doing thereafter to appease Kashmir, the BJP is digging its political grave in Jammu and Kashmir and discrediting the BJP at the national level. It is time for the BJP leadership to see the writing on the wall and refashion its whole policy towards Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh as well as Pakistan and its agents in Kashmir. The sooner it does so he better. Otherwise, it would meet the fate the Congress met at the state and national levels in 2014. |
