AIIMS issue divides J&K BJP | Delegation to Delhi? | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 27: The raging controversy over the decision of the PDP-BJP coalition and the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre to establish AIIMS in Kashmir has created a peculiar situation for the local BJP leadership which has been at the receiving end and under fire. The leadership has gone so confused that it has not been able to take one stand on the issue. On the one hand, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Nirmal Singh has been taking a hard stand and saying that no power on earth can "snatch AIIMS from Kashmir" and that he and his party would see to it that the pro-Jammu moves of those who have been opposing the decision are defeated. He declared his stand on the issueon Friday, the day the people of Jammu province observed bandh against the coalition government in general and the BJP and the Modi government in particular. On the other hand, the very next day (April 25), MoS in the PMO Jitendra Singh virtually contradicted Nirmal Singh while speaking at Kathua. He said the AIIMS was always meant for Jammu. Very significantly, he had expressed his gratitude to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who on 28th February had announced on the floor of the Lok Sabha that Jammu will get AIIMS. The contradictory statements made by two senior party leaders and ministers clearly suggested that their party didn't have a definite view on the issue and that it was a free for all situation. However, on Saturday, a few senior party functionaries, including state BJP president Jugal Kishore Sharma, state BJP general secretary (Organization) Ashok Koul and a few MLAs reportedly met to discuss the issue arising out of the Friday complete bandh. A report in this regard said: "Finding itself on the back foot over the AIIMS issue, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to pursue the matter seriously with the party high command for which the State President Jugal Kishore Sharma and 5 MLAs of the party from Jammu District have been assigned the task to hold deliberations with the centre. The decision was taken in a closed door meeting which was held yesterday (Saturday) at Jammu in which state president and MP Jugal Kishore Sharma, Jammu West MLA Sat Sharma, party General Secretary (organisation) Ashok Koul and RS Pura MLA Dr Gagan Bhagat were present". The said report further said: "It was decided that the state president and five MLAs of the party from Jammu district will hold talks with Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Ram Madhav and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The response to 'Jammu Bandh' over AIIMS issue and consequences of the same in future were discussed in the meeting. It was decided that the matter should be resolved before it becomes an issue for the opposition, thereby, making the party suffer in its strong bastion. The decision to depute leaders to Delhi was taken later in the evening. The state president and the MLAs are most likely to leave for Delhi tomorrow to meet the senior leaders of the party and will demand AIIMS for Jammu as well". All this explains everything and establishes that the BJP has lost its way. No wonder its opponents like the Congress, the NC and the JKNPP are exploiting the contradictions within the BJP to their own advantage and slowly but surely regaining their lost ground by identifying them with the Jammu sentiment. |
