PM likely to approve Rs 44k cr flood relief package for J&K | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to approve the Rs 44,000 crore proposal sent by J&K for rehabilitation of people hit by last year's devastating flood in the state. Top sources told Early Times that the PM has directed the union finance and other related ministries to have a second look at the proposal and approve it at the earliest. "PM Modi has assured J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that the proposal would be approved. The assurance was made after the PM was apprised of problems due to the delay in releasing the money and its political fallout," the sources said. They said that it was on the directions of the CM that the package for flood affected people was put at the top on the list of the priorities submitted to the PM by the group of the ministers which called on him in New Delhi recently. The group, led by Deputy CM Nirmal Singh included finance minister Haseeb Drabu. The delay in the approval of the package, reportedly because of serious reservations expressed by the finance ministry, has put the process of relief distribution among the flood-hit on hold, much to the embarrassment of the first BJP government in the state. "The PM was also again apprised that more than 200 people have died in Jammu region out of the total death of 300 in the floods, where BJP has stronghold and hopes to consolidate its grip," said a senior official privy to the developments. "The PM was also apprised that recent developments in Kashmir Valley and with opposition stoking feelings against the Centre on account of not releasing funds could further complicate the matter. It is the tourist season in the Valley and people need funds, and if it is delayed it could generate unrest and this could pose trouble for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. The government agreed to it," said the sources. |
