Support for a separate new state of Panun Kashmir | Return of Pandits | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 28: Panun Kashmir, premier organization of internally-displaced Kashmiri Pandits, has been demanding bifurcation of Kashmir and establishment of a separate homeland for the community within the Valley, which should be invested the Union territory status so that the Indian Constitution flows there freely. On Monday, senior leaders of Panun Kashmir Agnishekhar and Ajay Chrungoo reiterated their demand and said that their community would return to Kashmir only if a separate homeland in the Valley was created for them. In a joint statement, the Panun Kashmir leaders, inter-alia, said: "Panun Kashmir has always recognized the unflinching unity within the Kashmiri Hindus. We don't think that Kashmiri Hindus are disunited. That has always been the expression of incomprehension amongst some but primarily the job of mercenaries and fifth columnists. Panun Kashmir has not delegated the responsibility of the mission of Panun Kashmir and Homeland to anybody. We are capable enough to handle this responsibility. We don't have sermons for anybody who doesn't believe in our vision. Our goal is homeland and not mere positioning with regard to half-baked, disruptive and harmful proposals of the (BJP) government of the day. We are not responsible for the actions of anybody who mobilizes in our name but without our sanction. There is a need for all to unite on the (December 28, 1991) Margadarshan Resolution and not let any tinkering with the same. And Panun Kashmir assures the community and the Patriotic People of India that together they would work for creating a resurgent India, for restoring India in that Kashmir, which would be free of any encumbrances of the superfluous and temporary Article 370. A Panun Kashmir where India and Indic imperatives would prevail and resurrect the life that once dotted and claimed to be the cradle of Indian Civilization". Very significantly, on Monday a retired General also endorsed the demand for a separate homeland for Kashmiri Pandits within the Valley. Former Chief of Army Staff and a former member of Parliament Shankar Roychowdhury said that the return of Pandits is imperative and, at the same time, opined, and rightly, that they must "not continue to remain hostages to hostility and militancy inside India". "Given the history of their exodus, insurgency in Kashmir and the results thrown up by the Assembly elections, the 'ghar wapsi' of Kashmiri Pandits will be a watershed moment in Indian history, but it can come about only if the Government of India intervenes directly in the process. Paving the way for their return requires major political restructuring in the Valley itself, even, perhaps, carving out space for a separate new state of 'Panun Kashmir'. This can take the shape of complexes established under protection in the Valley, as safe enclaves. It is an inevitable watershed in history that cannot be put off further," he said. That the former Army Chief talked about the restructuring in the Valley itself, even, perhaps, carving out space for a separate new state of Panun Kashmir suggests that there are objective persons in the country who are fully aware of the prevailing environment in the Valley. They are convinced that the best way to ensure their return to the Valley is the creation of a separate state of Panun Kashmir. Only a week ago, a leading commentator Tavleen Singh had asked Prime Minister Modi to make a new Kashmir policy and told him that while making a new Kashmir policy, he must not forget that there are two more regions in the state, Jammu and Ladakh, who are opposed to demands like azadi and want complete unification with India. Of course, she didn't talk about the Kashmiri Pandits, but she did talk about a solution that must recognize Jammu and Ladakh as part of the problem. In any case, developments have been unfolding in the state and in New Delhi which could lead to disintegration of Jammu and Kashmir and establishment of Jammu and Ladakh as full-fledged states of Panun Kashmir within the Valley. In fact, the Modi Government has been behaving in a most irresponsible manner and creating an environment that would force the nationalists in the state to rise in revolt against the BJP and the BJP-led NDA Government in Delhi. |
