Without sharing political & ideological similarities BJP, PDP share power in J&K | Behind the veil | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 2: It has taken exactly two months for the Deputy Chief Minister,Dr Nirmal Singh,to understand and realize that there is nothing common between the BJP and the PDP that share power in Jammu and Kashmir.Did he not know that the two had ideological and political differences before the two decided to forge an alliance for the formation of the Government and that too in a sensitive state like Jammu and Kashmir ? As a professor teaching history one may not believe that Dr Nirmal Singh had no knowledge about political and ideological differences between the BJP and the PDP days or weeks or months before the two decided to join hands for sharing power. What does Dr Nirmal Singh has said about the ideological differences with the PDP ? He has,in fact, voiced the traditional views on the matter in simple terms. He has said that the BJP does not share ideological and political similarities with the PDP.And he has made it clear to his critics that the alliance had been forged merely to give to the state of Jammu and Kashmir a stable and corruption free Government. This means that the BJP and the PDP could share power even if the two do not share political and ideological similarities.Does Dr Nirmal Singh mean that it is only the BJP and the PDP that can give to the state a stable and corruption free Government ?If he means so what about the PDP led Government that was formed in Jammu and Kashmir in 2002 in alliance with the Congress ?Does Dr Nirmal Singh believe that the PDP-Congress Government failed to give to the state of Jammu and Kashmir a stable and corruption free Government ? Possibly Dr Nirmal Singh can be neither so blunt nor so reckless that he would paint the PDP-Congress coalition Government to have failed to provide a stable and corruption free Government. Following the BJP's decision to share power with the PDP the only thing that Nirmal Singh can say is that if the previous PDP-Congress had failed to provide a stable and corruption free Government it was because of the Congress. It will suit Dr Singh's ideology if he berates the Congress for not having assisted the PDP in providing a stable and corruption free Government. What seems to have provoked Dr Nirmal Singh to dish out a statement in which he has talked about ideological and political differences between the BJP and the PDP.If Singh is to be believed it is the BJP's views on the AFSPA.And the Deputy Chief Minister has been provoked by the PDP Chief,Mehbooba Mufti, who favoured gradual withdrawal of the AFSPA.Dr Singh has said that since the security scenario was yet to be stable and peaceful there was no need for lifting of the AFSPA. Does Dr Nirmal Singh know that the BJP has compromised on the Article 370 issue ?.The PDP is totally opposed to the initial demand of the BJP for revoking Article 370 that grants special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir within the union of India. The PDP is totally opposed to any move for even diluting the spirit of Article 370 ? When Dr Singh talks about political and ideological differences why should he not talk about other issues including BJP's plan of granting citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan and about the BJP's plan on rehabilitating displaced people in a composite township in the Kashmir valley.Yes,the PDP wants separate clusters to be built for resettling the Pandits but these clusters need to be built within villages and towns so that Pandits do not lead a segregated life. Well Dr Nirmal Singh merits appreciation for the stand the BJP has taken for sharing power with a party(PDP) with which there is no political and ideological similarities. And if the coalition or the alliance has been hammered out simply to provide a stable and corruption free Government to Jammu and Kashmir it would be a great service the BJP and the PDP would be doing to the people of the state.Hitherto,Jammu and Kashmir has achieved the distinction of being the second most corrupt state after Bihar and one may forget about political and ideological differences if people get a stable and corruption free Government.Let the PDP and the BJP "turn the fortune's wheel about" by laying emphasis on development of the state,on development of the state's economy, ondevelopment in peoples' living standard. |
