'Green Gold' felling unabated in Doda, Forest Deptt unaware of nexus

Early Times Report

DODA, May 3: The whole world is running campaigns to maintain the fast tipping ecological balance of our planet but loot of green gold in Dhara Tashnal of division Doda falling under Doda forest Division of Chenab circle continues unabated.
The various species of trees including Deodar were found lying on ground inside compartment No. 52 not only causing damage to the environment, but also to state exchequer.
While talking to Early Times, the locals informed that Forest officials have nexus with timber smugglers who in a well planned manner cut the green trees and supply the timber to the influential persons and also to the people living in and around Doda town.
The village Dhara Tashnal of Doda which is near Gundana block of Doda , once known for its thick forest and rich wild life, shows a grim picture and the forests that seemed much dense when looked at a distance are fast losing their sheen with authorities acting a mute spectator of all this.
A visit to the areas lifts several curtains and the inside story is completely different and the "worrisome" scenes of half cut trees and burnt stems is enough to describe the pace at which the timber smuggling is going on in the area. This heavy smuggling not only is an open loot of green gold but also gives birth to other environment hazards like deforestation, soil erosion and loss of habitat for wild animals that pushes the wild creatures to move towards human population leading to serious issue of man-animal conflict. There have been regular wild animal attacks in the region which experts blame on the shrinking forest space for these animals and growing intrusion of humans into animal habitats. The locals said that after cutting the green trees, the persons involved in looting of green gold put the tree trunk on fire which not only polluted the atmosphere, but also causes threat to the forest area which is undergoing drought this year due to less rainfall. It is pertinent to mention that Forest officer-Smugglers nexus galore in many areas of Chenab circle spread over three Districts viz Doda, Kishtwar & Ramban causing lot of damage to state exchequer, beside creating environmental hazards in the area. When contacted DFO Doda denied the blame and said that he has not received any complaint or information in this regard. However the chief conservator of forests didn't give any response to the telephone call as well as the SMS.
