Govt contractors stage protest against Finance Department

Kathua, May 18: Government Contractors' Association today staged huge protest demonstration against Finance Department outside the office of District Treasury Officer Kathua where they raised demand for earliest release of payments for the development works being done by contractors. The protest was led by Pankaj Sharma, President of the association.
While addressing to protesters, Pankaj said their cheque have not been released for 2 months that affects working of ongoing projects. Dozens of contractors formulated the demand of earliest release of payment for works which was completed or about to complete within days but Finance department impediments to release their payment of 15 crores for those works which were began since Oct. 2014.
Pankaj said the department formulated several excuses for not releasing their pending payment but ironically self cheque of those works which are done by PWD itself are released within hours. He said biased attitude of treasury officers pointed out several questions on his working.
Bholi Singh, another Contractor said they raised issues to Finance department and Treasury officers but nothing has been done till day and contractors have been pushed to miserable condition. He said government must itself realize suffering of contractors by blocking payments of contractors.
The protesters gave ultimatum of one week and threatened to hold protest besides lock to treasury office if government does not release their funds within week.
When contacted to District treasury officer, Md Arshad Choudhary, he said Treasury office Kathua sends requirement sheet is regularly send to Directorate Finance Department and Secretariat but due to lack of funding from government side , the officers are unable to release the payment of these contractors. Officer assured that he would proceed with their demands to concerned authority and assured to release their payment as early as possible.
