When will silver screen return to Kashmir? | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 18: While shooting in Sonamarg for his Bajrangi Bhaijan, Bollywood sensation, Salman Khan expressed anguish that successive state governments had failed to open cinema halls in Kashmir. Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed seems genuinely concerned about getting Bollywood back to Kashmir. The shooting of Bajrangi Bhaijaan reflects Mufti's campaign has yielded results. In fact the former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son, Omar Abdullah must own responsibility for failure to throw open the cinema halls. To trumpet normality, Dr Farooq gave incentives and managed to open three cinema halls, Broadway, Regal and Neelam. The Regal closed down after just one show as a grenade attack on the film viewers killed one and injured four. Broadway remained open for some time but had to be closed down. The Neelam ran for some years but was closed down in 2010 when the summer agitation proved too hard for the owners to resist. All the halls would have remained open had the then governments offered adequate security. All the cinema halls in Kashmir were closed down in 1989 when the militancy commenced. An outfit, Allah Tigers launched a massive campaign against the cinema halls and liquor shops forcing the owners to close down their business. |
