Centre can be gracious if travel documents issued to Geelani
5/18/2015 11:37:26 PM
When the BJP announced in Srinagar that a passport could be given to Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads a conglomerate of hardliners among the separatists,if he(Geelani) apologized for indulging in anti-India activities and acknowledge that he is an Indian it was simply part of the political ideology of the BJP..Well as far as the second part of the statement from the BJP spokesman is concerned anyone who applies for the passport has to say that he is an Indian.Well the issue of giving a passport or denying Geelani the right to have a passport is an open issue.Well years ago he had been issued a passport and that was the reason that he could travel to various places. But after he started inciting people to stage anti-India protest rallies and issued pro- Pakistan statements his p;assport was impounded and since then he was not given any travel documents for visiting any country in the world. What seems to have irked the leaders of the state unit of the BJP is Geelani's display of pro-Pakistan sentiments at a number of rallies he has held in Kashmir during the last several years, particularly during the last several weeks. It is in this connection that the BJP has said that if the Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani needs a passport he should give an affidavit to acknowledge that he is an Indian, and he should apologize for indulging in anti-India activities. In a statement the BJP spokesman Khalid Jehangir said, "Passport cannot be given to Geelani till he apologizes for the mistakes he has committed during the past 25 years. Passports are issued to Indian citizens and not the ones who don't believe in India and its democracy." "If Geelani sahib wants the passport then has to fall in the line and follow law of the land," he added.
The BJP spokesman has said that if Geelani acknowledges that he is an Indian and won't indulge in anti-India activities then Government of India can consider his request for the passport. The GoI cannot give a passport to a person who spews venom against the country where he lives and enjoys all the comforts, according to Jehangir. Well during the last several years the Government of India has not renewed or reissued the passport in favour of Geelani that had been impounded long back.Though Geelani made a feeble attempt at securing renewal of his passport,he,however, did not make a determined bid by signing the dotted lines which could have motivated the Government of India and the Passport officer to either renew his passport or issue a new one. He,however did not make an issue.Yes,he did make an issue when other separatists were issued the valid travel documents which facilitated them in travelling to various countries, including Pakistan. In this category were Molvi Umar Farooq and Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat.In case of Prof. Bhat and Molvi Abbas Ansari and others their passports were impounded and later were re-issued when they applied for it.But in case of Geelani this concession was denied.
It seems that the BJP spokesman is asking for those things which Syed Ali Shah Geelani may not be able to fulfill. The BJP spokesman wants Geelani sahib to admit that he has pursued a wrong ideology for his entire life and has pushed people of Jammu and Kashmir towards darkness and wilderness. It's high time for him to accept his follies and join the mainstream.Well those who know Syed Ali Shah Geelani from close quarters are sure that the separatist leader was not ready to concede the BJP spokesman's demands.Even recently Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been parroting the need for implementing the UN resolutions on Kashmir and has not deviated from his oft repeated stand on Kashmir should be incorporated with Pakistan. As such Geelani has neither the right nor any justification for seeking passport from India. But what seems to have motivated him for securing renewal of his passport is the outcome of his worry over the plight of his daughter. The octogenarian separatist leader's daughter is critically ill in Saudi Arabia and Geelani has wished to pay a visit to her sailing daughter. He has also applied for travel documents which are not available to him. Here the Government of India, especially the BJP leadership can display grace by issuing valid travel documents to Syed Ali Shah Geelani so that he could visit his daughter. The Government could issue valid travel documents for a fixed period of time, say one week or a fortnight, which was enough for Geelani to enquire about welfare of his daughter.
