Moderate to heavy rain plummets in Kashmir, wet weather to continue

Srinagar, May 18: Moderate to heavy rain during the past 24 hours resulted in cold as more wet weather is predicted during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir valley, where world famous ski resort of Gulmarg recorded lowest 4.5 degree minimum temperature after 22.2 mm rainfall during the night.
A Met department spokesman said there could be rain or thundershowers at most places in the Kashmir valley and Jammu region and at few places in Ladakh region during the next 24 hours. However, there could be decrease in precipitation from May 20, he said.
Barring Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, the mercury remained above normal despite moderate to heavy rain during the past 24 hours in the valley, where people woke up to yet another wet morning. Gulmarg, where snow on the ski slopes had melted due to rain and above normal temperature during this month, the minimum temperature also witnessed a drop, due to 22.2 rainfall till 0830 hrs. Against yesterdays 9.4 degree minimum temperature, it dropped and settled at 4.5 degree, 1.5 notches below normal. However, snow could be seen at Kongdori, Khilanmarg and Affarwat, connected by Cable Car, a hotel owner said over phone.
He said a large number of tourists are arriving at the ski resort from different parts of the country and abroad every day. Interestingly at Pahalgam, a famed health resort in south Kashmir, the minimum temperature witnessed a slight increase. Against yesterday's 7.8 degree, it was 8 degree, three notches above normal despite 16.4 mm rainfall till 0830 hrs.
