BJP & PDP; Dilemma of relationship status! | | | Kr Joginder Singh Thakur
The vigour of assembly elections last winter was something to watch out for. The bitterness with which these elections were fought was unprecedentedly aggressive. Even the yesterday's coalition partners were at daggers drawn. Congress credited National conference for the fissures left in the way the last government worked and the national conference returned the favour with same intensity. BJP cashed in on the baap-beta & baap-betiki sarkaar and PDP gained the momentum by crying foul for AFSPA. And Congresscame up with something for which it is known for long; a well calculated election gimmick by apologizing for the hanging of terrorist Afzal Guru. It fructified as well when congress won the seat from Sopore i.e. home of Afzal Guru. But I was surprised when a guy like Shashi Tharoor regretted his hanging. National Conference also played its card by announcing 700 new administrative units and revoking the recruitment policy. And with great reverence I must say that finally Prof Bhim Singh succeeded in doing what Lal Krishna Advani failed to; decimating the party which he had mothered. After listening to tambourine of all the parties, the junta came up with a verdict on a day after winter solstice. After an honest analysis of the elections, I would say that this is the strangest verdict J&K has ever noticed. There was no clear loser or an outright winner in the verdict. A strangely fractured mandate warranted working over the permutations and combinations for formation of government. Arun Jaitley, Arun Singh and Avinash Rai Khanna rushed in from Delhi to meet a desperate lot of newly elected MLA's of BJP, majority of whom were first time legislators. And PDP also showed a sort of bent towards BJP which was never there before that day. National conference was also not out of the fray when Omar in a blatant exhibition of power hunger showed his willingness to support any party for the so-called welfare of the state. And lastly Ghulam Nabi Azad came up with a million dollar statement that it is the choice of PDP whether they want to go for a secular party like congress or a communal party like BJP. I do not feel like going deep into the details of secular character of congress because this is not the right place for that. Even after what happened with him in 2008, Azad was not having any problem to collate with PDP. In a way each one of them was ready to offer their self to lewdness and lechery of the other just to attain power. Then in the aftermath of BJP's flop show in Delhi, PDP and BJP forged a friendship just for sake of forming a government for the so-called welfare of people of J&K. The power sharing of govt took place with PDP being the senior pro and BJP its sub-ordinate. Nirmal Singh, like GNA, is a guy who had never won any election prior to this one, but contested each one of them unsuccessfully was BJP's choice for heading the govt. The substantial ministries were gifted to PDP and the leftover was given to BJP to feel glorified. Arun Jaitley once had said this thing in Rajya Sabha that this set up is the most popular govt as PDP is the popular govt. in Kashmir and BJP in jammu. But Mr. Jaitley, your populism has gone so far that the ideologies of both the outfits were sacrificed in the transactions. This is the misfortune of J&K politics that guyz like Jaitley & Azad are controlling its dynamics. These guyz were not even able to secure their own seats in general elections last year and they are talking about the popular government. There is a sort of treatybehind a closed door between BJP and PDP to keep regional rhetoric on high so that no party losesground in their spheres. When PDP advocates release of the seditionist MasratAlam, BJP shows no reluctance to differ with the decision of their own govt. When there are issues like installation of AIIMS, both parties are never showing any restraint in denouncing the other one. So the government is working in a way that PDP is going to push for Kashmir and BJP for Jammu, with BJP playing the role of the exploited and PDP playing the dominant player. Are these two parties going to work smoothly for next six years? I have obviously certain reservations! So the coalition is neither for the welfare of Jammu nor for Kashmir, but a marriage of convenience. But calling it a marriage would be exaggerating it. Marriage involves a compulsion that you cannot leave the relationship once you are in. So this is just a live-in relationship, from which you can part your ways whenever any of them feels like. Or this relationship can be called as a "friends with benefits" or "No strings attached" sort of.
