Separatists' rallies should not distract Govt's attention | | | Since April 15,when Pakistani flags were waved and pro-Pakistan slogans were shouted at a rally organized to welcome Syed Ali Shah Geelani's return from New Delhi, a new trend has emerged in the Kashmir valley.Under this trend Kashmiri separatists have started registering their presence and attracting bigger crowds to their rallies by allowing their supporters to wave Pakistani flags and shout anti-India slogans during the rallies that are being addressed by these separatists. Demonstrating pro-Pakistan sentiments through waving of Pakistani flags and by shouting pro-Pakistan slogans has become a novel way of making their impact felt on the political scenario of Jammu and Kashmir. Knowing that waving Pak flags and shouting pro-Pakistan slogans receive adequate media attention and these acts ring alarm bells not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in New Delhi too. Not to speak of Pakistan where such events find place on front pages of print media and receive sufficient time on the electronic media where details of waving of Pak flags and shouting of anti-India slogans are telecast repeatedly. Though Masarat Alam, a close associate of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who heads a conglomerate of hardliners among the separatists, was catapulted to prominence when he organized a rally in honour of Geelani's return to Srinagar from New Delhi where his supporters waved Pakistani flags and shouted pro-Pakistan slogans. Though this incident fuelled a major controversy which led to the re-arrest of Alam under Public Safety Act, he has become a hero among the separatists. And the display of Pro-Pakistan sentiments by waving Pak flags and by shouting pro-Pakistan slogans has become a fashion and a political passion among the separatists and their supporters. That these separatists enjoy pledging their loyalty to Pakistan is evident from the repeat of events related to waving of Pakistani flags and shouting of anti-India slogans. It is what happened on May 1, in Tral, which otherwise has become a haven for militants, where during a rally, addressed by Geelani, supporters of separatists waved Pak flags and shouted pro-Pakistan slogans. Though being treated as a moderate among the separatists Shabir Ahmed Shah too felt elated when groups of people, who had come to attend his rally in Anantnag, on May 29th waved Pakistani flags and shouted pro-Pakistan slogans. Shah was arrested possibly to show to the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh that whosoever engineered display of pro-Pakistan sentiments would not be spared. As was the case in earlier incidents the Anantnag incident too received wide coverage in the electronic and print media. These separatists know that waving Pakistani flags and shouting anti-India slogans make bigger news than dishing out long sermons. This is the reason that they enjoy defying the dictates of the central and the state Governments. Mark it. On Thursday Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, announced in Jammu and that the soil of Kashmir will not be allowed to be used for waving of Pak flags and for shouting anti-India slogans. On Friday the separatists led by Shabir Ahmed Shah defied Rajnath Singh and orgnised a rally in Anantnag where Pakistani flags were waved.Shabir Shah got wide coverage on the electronic and print media and his detention made another news.He could have not anticipated better than this had he simply indulged in fulminating against the PDP-BJP coalition Government or against Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Hence it will be proper and better for the state and the central Governments to ignore these rallies where Pak flags are waved. Let the law take its course and let the police act as per the law against those charged with sedition. It will be better if ruling leaders from the central Government and those running the coalition Government in Jammu and Kashmir avoid issuing do's and dont's to the separatists. Let the Government provide a stable and corruption free governance and let the separatists seek issues for remaining in the limelight. And let the rallies and demonstrations staged by these separatists do not distract the attention of the Mufti Mohd. Sayeed led Government. A stable and clean Government lone can silence these separatists. |
