Learners' swimming pool at MA Stadium not for learners! | | | Shiv Dev Thakur Early Times Report
Jammu, June 1: Bizarre it may sound but is true. Learners' pool at M A Stadium, Jammu is not for the learners as it lacks the necessary parameters. The learners' pools were planned way back in 1983 when the first phase of three-phased swimming pool was thrown open by then Governor, KV Krishna Rao. Then came the turn of former Sports Minister, Yogesh Sawhney, who had planned to make the swimming pool an indoor facility in 2007. But still no arrangements for the learners. Last year, a renovated swimming pool was inaugurated by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Raman Bhalla after work was going on it for more than three years. An amount of Rs 1.78 crore was spent on the renovation of the eight-lane outdoor coaching facility in aquatic sports. But still the swimming pool is not fit for the budding swimmers as well as the learner kids who wish to learn swimming. The minimum depth of the swimming pool at M A Stadium Jammu is about 5 feet which is quite dangerous for learners as well as the kids. Sources said the Sports Council not only failed to provide a swimming pool for the learners but has now stopped the entry of the budding swimmers as the minimum depth of the pool for the kids used to be 3 feet. Partap Singh, father of a budding swimmer, told Early Times that the unavailability of the swimming pool for kids causes frustration to the budding talents. Sports Officer Rajan Sharma admitted that the swimming pool at M A Stadium is not for the kids as well as the learners as it is 5 feet deep. He said the council only allows swimmers on the basis of their height as chances of drowning are there. "I have shot a letter to the higher authorities regarding opening of Sparsh pool at MA Stadium to accommodate kids," he said. |
