AIIMS CC in confrontation mode | Trouble in offing | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 21: It was on June 18 that the AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC), which has been spearheading movement for the establishment of AIIMS in Jammu since May 19, that it called off the shutdown call and also suspended the week-old chain hunger strike programme. The ACC took these steps following the intervention of two BJP Cabinet Ministers, Nirmal Singh and Bali Bhagat. They reassured the agitating ACC that its demand would be fulfilled latest by July 20 and it was their written commitment. The responsible ACC, which never took the law of the land into its hands, maintained peace and organized its activities within the constitutional confines, gave respect to the BJP and its ministers by appreciate the word they gave. The BJP should have reciprocated the mature, responsible and accommodating approach of the ACC and the only way it could have done so was by delivering the promise within the stipulated period. Ironically, it didn't happen and the result is before us: The ACC today revived chain hunger strike at the same venue: Lawns in front of the statute of Maharaja Hari Singh, Tawi Bridge, Jammu. Sources close to the ACC reveal that "it has already done the homework" and that "it could take recourse to radical means to force the authorities to concede its two demands". Its two demands include establishment of the promised AIIMS for Jammu in Jammu and completion of the artificial lake project over River Tawi. "The ACC could anytime from now call for a bandh for a longer period. It could, in addition, organize a massive march in Jammu anytime from now. It could even enforce civil curfew for two to three days," sources close to the ACC informed. "What the ACC would do to get its objectives achieved would become clear within the next two days," sources said, adding that the "ACC is all set to take on head on the BJP, which cheated it and the people of Jammu region". It would be only desirable if the BJP takes some concrete steps to defuse the developing potentially dangerous situation in Jammu region, where the people are chaffing and seething with anger and using a very strong language against the BJP. The BJP is in power. It would be in its own interest if it acts before it is too late. It has already lost its face and credibility and become extremely unpopular in Jammu region. And why should it not conciliating its estranged constituency by appreciating its sentiment? It must not commit political suicide. |
