Bumhuma, Drugmulla locals protest over 'water scarcity' | | | Early Times Report Kupwara, July 27: Residents of Bumhuma, Drugmulla villages in Kupwara district today protested against authorities for failing to provide them the potable water and also blocked Kupwara -Srinagar road near Bumhuma for hours to register their protest against authorities. The protestors including women and children blocked the Kupwara -Srinagar road near Bumhuma for hours demanding immediate restoration of water supply, which according to them was affected for past few weeks compounding their miseries. The protesting women also broke empty pitchers amid slogans against Public Health Engineering (PHE) department. "We are forced to use the contaminated water from open sources due to shortage of potable water," said Firdous Ahmad Khan, from Bumhuma. Some other residents said that due to the incessant rains during past few days, the water in nullahs and ponds has become muddy and unsafe for human consumption while flood like situation have further made it hazardous for the people to fetch water from rivers. "Now that alternative sources of water have been rendered unsafe due to the incessant rains, we are left with no source of potable water. The department concerned is testing our patience ,"said Bilkeesa Bano from Khan Mohalla Bumhuma, while adding that water sacristy has affected Khan Mohalla, Bumhuma and Drugmulla. On receiving information of protest SHO Drugmulla rushed to spot and pacified the protestors by assuring that authorities concerned would be apprised of their genuine demand. Meanwhile a senior PHE official on anonymity briefly said a team of officials would be visiting the affected villages today and the problem will be addressed soon. |
