Police used tear gas shells, water cannon to disperse Separatists | Authorities Barred Hardliner Geelani's gathering | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 23: The authorities today scuttled the plan of separatists to assemble at Hyderpora residence of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, triggering clashes between them and police. For maintaining law and order, police personnel had been deployed on the Srinagar roads since morning to block the movement of separatists towards the Geelani's residence at Hyderpora. Police sources said that they had inputs about the party convention of Geelani's separatist faction where Geelani and other leaders of his faction were scheduled to make addresses. Their gathering could have created law and order problems had it been allowed by authorities, the sources added. After some of the activists tried to break police cordon, police chased them away, resulting in clashes. Police also used tear smoke shells and water cannons to disperse the separatists and in clashes, some separatists were said to have received minor injuries. It is for the first time that Geelani was disallowed to hold 'Foundation Day' function of his outfit which was founded on August 7, 2004 after Geelani and his close associate Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai parted ways with Jama'at-e-Islami faction. The PDP-BJP coalition government had to face a lot of criticism from circles across the country earlier for allowing a gathering of separatists in many parts of Kashmir without any check. There were dozens of reports when Separatist leaders were caught hoisting flags of Pakistan in their gathering and shouting anti-national and pro-Pakistan slogans. Massive controversy had erupted after Masarat Alam and his associates had waved Pakistani flags in their gathering which was organized to receive Syed Ali Shah Geelani at Hyderpora after his return from Delhi. The move to disallow gathering of Geelani came at a time when NSA level talks scheduled at Delhi were called off and many separatist leaders who had reached Delhi were put to House detention in Delhi yesterday. |
