Soldier sustains splinter injuries | 3 LeT militants gunned down in Handwara | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq Early Times Report
KUPWARA, Aug 23: Three LeT militants were killed and a soldier sustained injuries in a night long gun battle at Handwara area of Kupwara district in North Kashmir on Sunday. Reliable sources informed early times that acting on specific information about the presence of militants in forests of Zachaldar area, Army's 21 RR, 6 RR, 9 Para and SOG cordoned off the Krumbhoora village in Handwara on Saturday evening. They received reports about presence of 3-4 heavily armed Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants in the area who had to come to the village for taking food, said sources. According to senior government official, "The gunfight began on Saturday evening after security forces received information about the presence of a group of 3-4 militants in Krumbhoora village of Handwara area. At around 8: 30 p.m on Saturday evening a search party of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and police was fired upon by hiding militants in Krumbhoora village, said official. The area was immediately cordoned off and reinforcements were rushed to ensure that the hiding militants could not escape. However the militants started firing upon the security forces, resulting into fierce encounter, said official. Official said that following the exchange of fire, three foreign militants were gunned down and one army Jawan was injured late evening of Saturday. Later in the day, the troops along with the additional reinforcement have launched the massive searches in the area to track down the hiding militant, official informed. Meanwhile Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police north Kashmir range, Garib Dass confirmed this to early times that, "Three foreign militants have been killed in Handwara area. These militants are believed to be the members of Lashkar e Toiba (LeT) militant outfit. He said that the militant's movements were spotted near Krumbhoora village of Handwara area in Rajwar sector on Saturdaylate evening. DIG said that, "one army men have also sustained splinter injuries in this operation. They were evacuated to Army hospital for advanced treatment. The dead bodies of three militants have been retrieved from the site of operation on Sunday morning. However the identification and affiliated Tanzeem is yet to be ascertained. Today morning 3 AK-47 rifles, 14 Magazines and large quantity of AK-47 ammunition, 2 Maps, 3 Radio Sets, 2 Rucksacks, 6 UBGLs Grenades, 4 Chinese Grenades, and other war like stores have been recovered from the killed militants whose identity is yet to be established, Dass added. |
