Worst ever power, water crisis in Kathua 80 PHE Sub-stations,transformers damaged | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 30: With 80 power stations and PHE Sub-stations developing a snag, the Kathua district is facing worst ever power and water crisis . There is total chaos in entire Kathua district in general and Kandi belt in particular where people have been put to many hardships due to power and water crisis. The apathy of the authorities to redress the problem has forced the people to resort to road blockade and hold protest demonstrations. There is hardly any day left when the people do not come to streets protesting against increasing power and water crisis. The protestors block the National Highway to press heir demands. According to reports, 80 power transformers and pump stations have broken down in Kathua and nobody seems interested in their repair. Pertinently there is one workshop for repairing of transformer in entire Kathua district. However, there is no workshop for repairing of motors of PHE sub stations in the district. Despite the fact that one mechanical and one civil division of PHE exist in the district but there is no workshop for repairing of the motors. Though the people have made umpteen pleas to the concerned authorities but they failed to act in this regard, sources added. Sources said PHE Department gets the motors repaired from private workshops and till the tenders and other formalities are completed people suffer due to water crisis. Moreover there is only one electrical workshop in the entire Kathua district catering to the needs of Ghagwal, Hiranagar, Kathua, Bani Billawar , Basohli and Mahanpur areas. A huge of amount is spent for shifting a damaged transformer from far-flung area of Bani, Basohli and Billawar to Kathua workshop and it takes months together in repairing the same due to the workload and manpower shortage in the workshop. Sources said there is only one workshop of PDD at Hatli More Kathua while there is need of having such workshops of PHE as well as PDD at Mhanpur and Ramkote. While the workshop at Mahanpur can cater to the needs of the people of Basohli, Billawar and Bani, the workshop at Ramkote can cater to the needs of the people of Dayalachak, Hiranagar, Ghagwal as well as Ramkote. The Kathua workshop of PDD be further strengthened and a PHE workshop should also be opened there to defuse the work load on other workshops during emergencies, sources added. Sources said this proposal was submitted to government number of times earlier by the public representatives of the district but the same is gathering the dust as no one at the helm of affairs bothers to look into the problem. |
