Allocations shrinking, only few get 100 days guaranteed work | MGNREGA dying slow death | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 10: The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) which had invited strong criticism from Prime Minister Narender Modi, is dying a slow death in J&K as not even half of applicants got work this financial year. More surprisingly, not even one percent of those get job complete 100 days' job, guaranteed under this scheme. According to the data available, there is decline in allocation of funds to all the State and in Jammu and Kashmir, a total of 211472 households had demanded employment under MGNREGA scheme but merely 103307 have so far been provided employment, which accounts for 48.85 percent. Moreover, out of 103307 applicants who get employment, only 653 have so far completed 100 days of employment, despite the fact that the Scheme guaranteed minimum of 100 days employment to each household. District Kishtwar is worst performer, where 374 households had demanded employment but not a single household has so far get the job, as per data available with Early Times. In District Doda, 10702 had demanded employment but only 6040 got the job where as only 14 have so far completed 100 days despite the fact that only four months for closure of financial year 2015-16 are left. Out of 12230 households which applied for employment under the Scheme only 2942 were provided employment. Besides, only 14 households have so far completed 100 days' employment. In Poonch, 8190 had demanded employment out of which 4683 got employment out of which 25 have completed 100 days employment. In Anantnag district 19970 had demanded employment but only 8844 had so far got employment out of which only 71 have completed 100 days. The District Jammu has shown some positive performance in comparison to others as 13747 households have so far been provided jobs out of 19833 besides 116 have completed 100 days. The story of remaining districts more or less same but the shocking aspect is very little number of households in all the districts, who have completed 100 days. The number of households, who have so far completed 100 days are Budgam (5), Bandipora (50), Baramulla (14), Ganderbal (4), Kargil (nil), Kathua (7), Kishtwar (Nil), Kulgam (96), Leh (7), Pulwama (11), Rajouri (100), Ramban (37), Reasi (1), Samba (2), Shopian (55) Srinagar (9), Udhampur (15). Though MGNREGS was launched by UPA Government and NDA led Union Government has also reduced spending on the scheme as it is not on priority of Government, due to which the scheme is showing very dismal performance. |
