No role for State BJP in talks over Govt formation | | | Hyder Ali Early times Report srinagar, Mar 25: The past three months of twists and turns over Government formation have yet again exposed that the State chapter of the Bharatiya Janta Party has no role in crucial matters, which decide the fate of governance in Jammu and Kashmir and that the State BJP acts on handholding from New Delhi. From the negotiations over continuation of alliance with the regional-ally Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to election of Dr Nirmal Singh as the leader nominated for the Deputy Chief Minister's post in the new coalition Government, over the months, all decisions were "made in New Delhi". Sources said details of most of the developments were shared with the BJP leaders from Jammu only today when the party's national secretary Ram Madhav visited the winter capital to "feed them about the future course of action." The decisions, imposed unilaterally on the State BJP, throw light on the alleged inexperience, which its leaders have exhibited since the day the previous PDP-BJP was voted to power n March 1, 2015. While the party failed to come up to the expectations of the people of Jammu who voted them to power, the BJP could even not speak about the aspirations of the people of the region. On one hand it was PDP, which remained reluctant over Government formation till its demands were not, while on the other it was BJP with no demands in tune with the regional aspirations. The party even failed to negotiate with PDP over Government formation. Highly places sources said the PDP discussed each and every bit over continuance of alliance with the BJP leadership in New Delhi and that the State-based leadership was never a party to such parleys. There were even reports that the BJP leaders didn't even properly attend the funeral of the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, when one of his Cabinet colleagues was seen taking selfies during the funeral at the Dara Shikoh Park in south Kashmir's Bijbehara on January 7. Thereafter, as per sources, there were no negotiators between the two allies. After over the month-long silence over PDP-BJP relationship, a ray of hope had emerged, after Mufti's Chehlum, the 40th-day mourning, on February 18 when Ram Madhav secretly visited Kashmir for talks with Mehbooba at her Fairview residence here. Madhav had flown to Kashmir straight from New Delhi, alone with none of the leaders from the State wing of the BJP. Thereafter when the PDP held negotiations with the New Delhi it was again in the absence of any involvement of the other ally, who represents Jammu. The Jammu BJP seems to have been so much out of the picture that earlier this month, when Ram Madhav hinted at a breakup between the two allies by saying that "no conditions would be accepted from the PDP prior to Government formation" the BJP leaders in Jammu said "all is well". Thereafter it was again no elected representative leader from Jammu but Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who again brought the two parties closer. And on March 22, when PDP president Mehbooba Mufti held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leaders from Jammu were missing. Finally today when the party was supposed to choose the leader for the chair of Deputy Chief Minister speculations were already rife that the party would go with the whip from the Center. "Irrespective of the complaints over the poor performance of the party leadership in the previous ten-month stint, the leaders remained silent only to act like puppets," said a BJP leader asking not be identified. The first innings of the coalition drew massive criticism over the performance of the BJP while inexperience was seen a major cause of the failure. The party failed to meet the aspirations of the people while BJP's silence over imposition of tax on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage was criticized the most. "Ironically even at this time, the party has put forth no demands which could highlight the wishes of the people," said a political analyst. The BJP leadership is however satisfied with its performance. The BJP on Friday elected Dr Nirmal Singh as its leader in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and nominated him for the Deputy Chief Minister's post in the new PDP-BJP alliance Government to be headed by PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti. Speaking after BJP legislators met here, State BJP president Sat Pal Sharma said: "The BJP legislature party has elected Nirmal Singh as its leader and nominated him for the Deputy Chief Minister's post in the new coalition Government." Besides the BJP legislators, Dr Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, and Ram Madhav, general secretary in the Bharatiya Janata Party in charge of Jammu and Kashmir affairs, attended the meeting. Sources said the BJP leaders were curious to know how the pact was signed with the PDP. "Ram Madhav apprised them about the recent developments, including the Tuesday meeting in New Delhi between PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and Prime Minister Narendra Modi," the sources said. |
